Joe Straus, although he retained his seat, is not such a shoe-in to retain his Speakership. A number of his supporters retired and a further four more got primaried, at least partly on the basis of their support for him. His Speakership depended on votes from the ‘Rat caucus and a close coterie of GOP quislings. After they see what happened to his closest allies, he may not be able to recruit enough GOPers this time to hold back a strong challenge. Tea Partier Scott Turner has filed to challenge but he’s a relative newb and may not have enough gravitas for the old dogs to follow him.

It is amazing though how Strauss himself seems to stay in office. That district is pretty conservative but somehow he seems to convince the voters there to put him back in.
