Whatever easier picking they go after it probably won’t be on the sea. You can’t take cruise ships, they’re too damn big and nearly impossible to get on from a skiff not to mention being outnumbered a thousand to one. This takes cargo ships away. I suppose they can go after yachts but there really isn’t much money in that, plus you never know which yacht is actually a drug runner that’s a lot better armed. Some times certain brands of robbery just go away, how often do you hear about train robbery anymore? For a while they’d sneak into freight cars, but now freight cars don’t even exist.

“The idea of a remote-controlled ship is not new, it has been around for decades, but the difference is the technology now exists,” announced Oskar Levander, head of marine innovation engineering at Rolls-Royce, in an interview to the Financial Times last December.

I never said the sea. Again, you made that assumption. If they do continue any acts of piracy at sea, it will likely be against trawlers or the occasional hapless yachter. With the sea a less profitable area for piracy, they may be more likely to turn to good old fashioned “highway robbery” or, perhaps, enter into politics.

Anyone who has traveled by air regularly has entrusted their lives to Rolls-Royce. They sound like a snooty british company but have some of the best engineers and manufacturing facilities on the planet with an impeccable reputation for quality.

Caterpillar and Komatsu have been running autononomous mine hauler trucks in Australia and Canada for several year now. This trend isn't going away.

They have a good-sized presence on the Gulf Coast, so I’m familiar with them.

>>You assumed flesh and blood pirates. A group or rogue nation with access to the right computer talent wouldn’t need to set foot on the ship to take it.<<

Perhaps — quite the challenge...

Piracy is illegal activity, illegal activity can be countered by force, force is controlled by governments, ergo my original post.

I have a son in law working on driver less farm equipment with John Deere in Moline. It's a little scary to see an 8 wheel tractor as big as a tank running around on its own.

will underwriters agree to put $$ on the line?

weather is a huge factor in marine navigation, so software may not always determine the best course of action in an emergency.

Piracy made easy.

Just a thought - maybe piracy would be made much more difficult. No human lives to worry about. The ship and cargo could be sealed-up and locked tighter than a drum. Have drone-like firing systems on board. Take out any skinnies that get within 1000 yards.....

Not necessarily. Doesn't piracy mean that the boarding party is able to assume control of the ship (powerplant, steering, etc)? I suspect the design will make that extremely difficult.

I suspect the design will make it extremely easy for a human to override the automatics, lest a programming error cause a ship to go rogue into a busy port.

That ain’t piracy, that’s highway robbery. Piracy is at sea (unless it’s copyright violation):
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/piracy
1.practice of a pirate; robbery or illegal violence at sea.

So that’s not me making an assumption that’s you weaseling for a way to be right. Piracy WILL end with this, eventually.

I said, turn to “highway robbery” in my statement. Did you actually read it? Gads, your devout faith that this shall forever solve piracy by any actor is a bit much. Relax, Francis.

You said “I never said the sea. Again, you made that assumption. “ But you said piracy, which is at sea. If they turn to something that isn’t piracy that a solve for piracy. I’m relaxed, you’re the guy that’s upset that somebody but you might be right to the point where you’re pretending words don’t mean what they do.

What are you on about? I said that that would go on to some other criminal enterprise like Highway Robbery or politics. Gads. Is this all you have to do?

Here, so that you can brag to your mates at the pub.
You WIN! :-)
No one will ever even so much as contemplate even the possibility of ever committing an act of piracy ever again!

There, you can now sleep well with your glorious supreme victory over someone on the internet. :-)

So, no one makes any decisions today aboard those ships, they just sit there, enjoy the view and drink coffee?
