...they were not much higher ranking than the guy who emptied the waste baskets in the offices.

I beg your pardon! We were the face of customer service! And the "big boss" would ride around to make sure that we were smiling at all times.

(Oh gag! He would smoke a cigar, and I could hardly stand it when he got on my elevator. Everybody else had to put out their cigarettes in the sand cylindars outside the elevator doors, but the general manager would NEVER put out his cigar. I would nearly retch each time he boarded my elevator, but I had to keep smiling and greet him pleasantly.)

I hate elevators. They made for congested cities built high. I hate the time wasted in them.

“First of all, I was a “Miss” during my elevator days.”

LOL. I plead stupid for not checking your FR homepage before posting. Your reply is not unexpected, so thank you for your service, MISS (even though you were not in uniform).

Loved your description of your old job. Thanks.

Then again, if all those leftists weren’t packed into hives, they might’ve (gasp) developed independent critical thinking skills.

LOL!!!

but I still remember my spiel for calling out each floor. “Second floor. Ladies, girls, and infants wear!”

I was just telling someone the other day that when I retire I'd like to tape my voice for use in these automated elevators..."Level 3...Going UP...", "Level 7...Going DOWN...". My voice would then be heard in all the finest elevators around the world. But it's too bad they're going in for those robotic voices.

Yep, this sounds like a job I could handle but I've already been replaced by technology. :O)

No apologies required. I love it when someone on FReeRepublic mistakes me for a man. It happens all the time. I like to imagine it is because my carefully reasoned, logical arguments sound masculine and therefore are more persuasive. LOL! I’m sort of a female “Walter Mitty”, imagining all kinds of adventures.

“Got stuck on an escalator once... what a nightmare. Took hours to get help”

Don’t feel bad. I once tripped while on the up escalator and fell down stairs for an hour and a half.

...I've already been replaced by technology

Every career I've ever had has been made redundant, starting with the elevator job.
