Banning the criminal checkbox could put vulnerable at risk

A representative of the Archdiocese of Baltimore voiced concerns Feb. 26 at a Baltimore City Council hearing about a controversial bill that could make it more difficult for employers to know if job applicants have been accused or convicted of sexual abuse.

Known as “Ban the Box,” City Council Bill 13-0301 primarily seeks to remove barriers to employment for job seekers with criminal histories. The ordinance would prohibit a hiring employer from conducting a criminal background check or inquiring about an applicant’s criminal history before extending a “conditional offer of employment.” The prohibition includes any checkbox a job seeker must mark on a job application if he or she has a criminal history.

The bill was heard before the council’s Judiciary and Legislative Investigations Committee.

Alison D’Alessandro, director of the archdiocese’s Office of Child and Youth Protection, testified that, as written, the measure would prohibit employers of organizations with vulnerable populations – children, youth, adults with disabilities and the elderly – from asking applicants whether they have been accused of sexual abuse. It would also prohibit employers from taking an applicant’s criminal history into consideration after a background check is completed.

The measure could also prohibit an employer from firing a person accused of child abuse but not convicted, D’Alessandro said.

Let the liberal run businesses not do background checks. See how many lawsuits they can rack up from their customers and students being assaulted, robbed, raped and murdered as a result of not protecting them from their own employees.

So... the point of a "background" check is.... uhhhh. what, exactly?

And I guess that companies that have to bond their employees won’t be able to check up on them first either.

Yeah, this is a GREAT idea.

Idiots, all of them.

Paint the “Ban the Box” movement as anti-gay and it’ll be crushed in a heartbeat.

It’s just another racial policy of the people in power now.

I wish they would just fire off the first shots and let CWII get underway.
We are past the point of peaceful resolutions to the tyranny here.
Thus isn’t a union worth preserving.

It’s only going to hurt most the people they wish to help.

If you can’t ask someone of their criminal background, an employer will be more apt to screen out resumes from people with funny names even before setting up an interview.

Some enterprising individual would just set up a service along the lines of credit score, only calling it an employability score.

Of course it is also understood why certain people get low rankings....

I have two fellons in my shop as skilled tool and die machinists. They have worked hard gaining trust and skills and repaying their debt to society. There should be reasonable efforts to employ felons. That being said is is absolutely rediculous that someone covicted of a certain crimes be hired in certain industries. Sex crimes particularly.

We’ve never had a Civil War, nor will the next interstate conflict be a Civil War (in which two opposing groups seek control of the national government).

We’ve had
War For Independence I - win.
War For Independence II - loss.
Future War For Independence III - tie breaker.

I agree.
We teach our kids it was the War of Northern Aggression.
But it takes too long to type out, and it always starts a side debate.
But I hear you my FRiend.
God bless.

It’s also absolutely ridiculous to, by law, deny an employer the ability to know that the potential hire is a felon.

And because there would be “disparate impact”, someone like Holder would shut down said service in a heartbeat, and sue them into poverty.

from asking applicants whether they have been accused of sexual abuse.

Convicted? Yes.

Currently under investigation? Yes.

Accused? No.

I haven’t visited Baltimore city in many years.

Who would invest in a business there?
