Alaska fixed this a long time ago. Try to use the insanity defense and you’re locked up in a mental hospital until cured. Then you start your jail time. Now nobody tries to use the insanity defense any more. Now is that a miracle or what?!

I guess some distance from the insanity in the lower 48 keeps the population's mental faculties acute.

Now nobody tries to use the insanity defense any more. Now is that a miracle or what?! This subject came up in the Quincy show many years ago (a fiction series about a medical examiner). I recall that Dr. Quincy went on a fairly long tirade about how a verdict selection in trials should be, "Insane, but guilty", rather than "Not guilty by reason of insanity." Such a verdict would keep these animals off the streets regardless of how they do in a mental hospital.
