John McCain: I Hope Jan Brewer Vetoes Gay Bill

Arizona's two Republican senators have urged their governor to veto a controversial measure that gives businesses in the state the right to refuse service to gays based on religious beliefs.

Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake offered Gov. Jan Brewer, R-Ariz., some unsolicited advice on Twitter. McCain on Monday echoed a tweet posted Saturday by Flake that addressed the issue directly: "I hope Governor Brewer will veto #SB1062," the tweets read.

Lawmakers in the GOP-controlled state House and Senate approved the legislation last week. Brewer, a fiery Republican who has embraced controversial laws in the past, hasn't said yet whether she plans to sign the bill. The measure would automatically become law after five days of sitting idly on her desk.

Flake and McCain are not as staunchly conservative as the state lawmakers that proposed and passed the measure.

Yet Monday, Republican state senators Bob Worsley, Adam Driggs and Steve Pierce sent their own letter to Brewer urging a veto just days after they joined the entire 17-member Senate Republican caucus in voting for the bill, the Associated Press reports. "I was not comfortable' with the vote,' Worsley told the AP. "I have not been comfortable with this for some time." The controversy with this bill highlights the divisions in the Republican Party as it grapples with the changing social landscape.

If he feels that way, maybe he should run for Governor of Arizona.

They character assassinated Hayworth in the primary and the Dems don’t EVER run anyone of note in the general, because McCain is their man.

By the time the media finished with Hayworth, there were Freepers parroting them. It was sickening. And old Red John waltzed back in.

McQueeg apparently has a problem with religious freedom. Yet another reason this vile POS needs to be kicked to the curb.

WTF?

They vote for it, then urge that it be vetoed?

How about a little more statesmanship and a little less gamesmanship?

I don't know the wording, but it should not establish a legal law against queers, just against queer so-called "marriage"

If two respectably dressed men came into my cake shop and asked for a cake to be made, and all it said was Happy Birthday Steve on it ... I have no idea who Steve is or why these two want to have a birthday cake made, but it's an acceptable celebration for someone named Steve

If they request a wedding cake with Congratulations Steve on it, ... same thing

BUT ...

If the request is for Steve and Bill ... THAT'S where I (personally) draw the line.

Sorry .... go somewhere else

Some highly placed Mormons in AZ want her to veto the bill too..

“’I am concerned that SB 1062 carries the real potential for unintended legal consequences that could negatively impact our most basic rights, including the freedom of religion,’ said Mormon Mesa AZ mayor Scott Smith, expressed serious reservations about the bill [known legislatively as SB 1062]/

“’This bill also could have a detrimental impact on Arizona’s business environment at a time when our economy is still fragile.’

“Smith — who is Mormon — also cited worries about religious discrimination.

“’As a Christian conservative, I am very troubled that religious rights are being trampled as part of the current debate on changes in our society. But, I am also a member of a church that has experienced severe persecution because of its beliefs,’ he said.

And the Mormon hotel chain called Marriott also asked the AZ gov to veto the bill The hotel chain sent her a letter saying Marriot would “continue to prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, gender, or sexual orientation” at its hotels in Arizona whether or not SB 1062 goes into effect

I agree that the potential to damage freedom and liberty outweighs the ‘right to refuse’

This bill supports Religious Freedom of businesses. What’s this guy smoking???????

The reporting on the reason for these legislations is awful. Its portraying Gays as the victims not the bullies.

Back in 2004 John Kerry was for it before he was against it when it came to Iraq, now these “Republicans” show their true colors which are no different from Kerry’s.

Maybe he is smoking some common sense. Or maybe he has given the issue at least 3 minutes of thought.

The way I understand the bill, just reading the highlights, any business can refuse you service just because you might be a Christian or Jewish. The unintended consequences are far greater than the solution. Slow down a minute and think it through.

Yes, i agree a business owner should not be sued for refusing to provide a "service" to an individual or entity that conflicts with their own religious belief system. However, this piece of legislation reaches too far.

Rewrite, or come up with another solution.
