The American air arm wants as many as 1,763 copies of the F-35A to replace most of its existing fighters and, in theory, maximize efficiency.
Anyone who believes this is smoking something. I’ll bet we ultimately buy less than 1000 F-35s. Maybe a lot less.

I would agree. And I would add that drone technology will have to be pushed forward to fill the gap. What’s the alternative? You need a less-capable, cheap airframe that you can afford to lose a lot of.
