SNIPPET: "The arrest of a woman accused of hiding more than 10,000 diamonds inside her body when she landed at Torontos Pearson International Airport comes amid warnings that Canada is one of the countries where illicit diamonds have been used for money laundering."
SNIPPET: "The woman had landed at Pearson on a Feb. 3 flight from Trinidad and Tobago, when she came to the attention of a Canada Border Services Agency officer, according to CBSA spokeswoman Vanessa Barrasa.
The RCMP said the woman was found to have carried 10,202 stones inside her.
The 1,500 carats (about 300 grams) of rough diamonds have an estimated value of $398,000, the RCMP said.
Helena Freida Bodner, a 66-year-old foreign national, was charged with four customs offences and two counts under the Export and Import of Rough Diamonds Act."
SNIPPET: "Trinidad is not a diamond-mining country. The nearest sources of the precious stones would be Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana."
SNIPPET: "A similar scheme is outlined in a report released last month by the Financial Action Task Force, a Paris-based intergovernmental body that sets standards and promotes anti-laundering reforms.
The report identified Canada as one of countries that have seen major criminal cases where diamonds were used as a currency in the narcotics trade, money laundering and terrorism financing."

How did they detect that she was carrying diamonds in her stomach?
Thanks for posting, Cindy. (good to see you) Very interesting.

The article doesn’t state how they detected the diamonds and I don’t want to speculate.
Good to see you to, PGalt.
Love that song.
"...now I know what they meant by me leaving "diamonds" under the rose bush"
What business is it of theirs is she has diamonds in her? What next arrest people with large rings? Governments get more overbearing and intrusive every day.
Being willfully ignorant in public does not honor free speech on FR.
Next time, THINK before you post.
Hey Fred ... is that a liver ?
Naaahhhh ... don't think so .... call Ralph.
Other than insulting me do you have a point, or are you just another jackboot licking government toady? Being willfully stupid and completely missing my point doesn't help your case toots.
WOW. I agree. People should have no property or valuables, except that the State allows us (or Canadians).
Not being contentious, but why do you think he was ignorant? Are you FOR government intrusion?
Kidney stones???????????????
If you were carrying that many diamonds you would usually think of bringing paperwork to prove provenance and would declare them instead of stuffing them in your body.
I know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but I think this gal went a little overboard.
Diamonds have strong x-ray fluorescence so I would guess one of those “harmless” backscatter x-ray body scanners lit up like a Christmas tree.
You also miss the point. Point being what business is it of the government if you're transporting valuables, currency, etc.? By saying you should show provenance, then you're automatically granting that the government has the right to control what you own and how much money/valuables you can carry etc.
Maybe she just didn’t want to check her luggage so she ate it instead?
I did not miss the point. You just don’t find rough diamonds like that. They are traded through tightly controlled channels and only certain brokers would have access to such a large amount of product.
