No one said he was the "king maker," but the US and the EU are involved heavily in striking a deal domestically and with the Russians. The EU delegation I the PMs from Poland, France, and Germany that went to Kiev on February 20 helped to broker a deal between the opposition and the government. Two of the EU PMs signed the agreement on Feb 21st to end the fighting.

Poland's foreign minister, Radek Sikorski, was caught on video telling a protest leader: "If you don't support this deal you will have martial law, the army. You'll be dead."

The Germans said the talks had been "very difficult", continuing all night and stopping for a break after 7am. It was not clear whether protesters would accept the deal. Anton Solovyov, 28, an IT worker in the central square, said: "This is just another piece of paper. We will not leave the barricades until Yanukovych steps down. That's all people want."

The EU and the US are players in this crisis. Our Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, Victoria Nuland, and our Ambassador in Kiev were distributing bread in the main square in December.

The western part has a strong history of Ukrainian nationalism going back hundreds of years. Putin isn’t going to be able to bully them into a bad deal without tanks. They will put up a fight. Putin will have to decide if he wants a hot war where his exposed pipelines are.

Besides military force, there are other way for Putin to influence events. Those pipelines are also vital to the EU, which depends on Russian gas for a major portion of their energy needs. Any significant interruption will affect the economies of the EU. Putin can use the EU to pressure the Ukrainian opposition and Obama, eager for deals with Syria and Iran, to help him behind the scenes.

The real question is what will the Ukrainian military and police do. The Parliament has voted to endorse the "coup," thus legalizing it. And don't underestimate the political corruption that exists across the political spectrum.

What the kenyan says/does in the end matter little on this one. The other parties have way more skin in the game.

Doing nothing or saying little has a major impact on events. Obama did little to support the Green Revolution in Iran. His silence helped to quash it. You may think that what the US says is of little consequence in the world, but it still matters in most of the world despite Obama. Ukraine is in major need of financial assistance. Its population is declining with one of the lowest fertility rates in the world, i.e., 1.29. Its population has negative growth. The average life expectancy for males at birth is 63.41 years.

If the US leads from behind, we will have another foreign policy disaster.

I am out of the woodwork, Pat. The "dictator" won the election in 2010. Be that as it may, the struggle is about whether the Ukraine remains in the Russian orbit or moves closer to the EU and the West. The history of the Ukraine and its relationship with the Soviet Union and the West is complicated. There is a significant Russian ethnic presence in the Ukraine. They are living in the Eastern part of the country, which happens to have the heaviest concentration of industry and is the wealthiest region of the country. From a WP article:

"Roughly speaking, about four out of every six people in Ukraine are ethnic Ukrainian and speak the Ukrainian language. Another one in six is ethnic Russian and speaks Russian. The last one-in-six is ethnic Ukrainian but speaks Russian. This map shows where each of those three major groups tend to live. ( about five percent of Ukrainians are minorities who don't fit in any of those three categories.)"

"Here's why this matters for what's happening in Ukraine now: Since it declared independence in 1991, the country has been politically divided along these ethnic-linguistic lines. In national elections, people from districts dominated by that majority group (Ukrainian-speakers who are ethnically Ukrainian) tend to vote for one candidate. And people from districts with lots of ethnic Russians or Russian-speakers tend to vote for the other candidate."

I can recall one other European who was concerned about protecting his ethnic minorities in other countries.

The non-Hispanic white population is projected to peak in 2024, at 199.6 million, up from 197.8 million in 2012. Unlike other race or ethnic groups, however, its population is projected to slowly decrease, falling by nearly 20.6 million from 2024 to 2060.

Meanwhile, the Hispanic population would more than double, from 53.3 million in 2012 to 128.8 million in 2060. Consequently, by the end of the period, nearly one in three U.S. residents would be Hispanic, up from about one in six today.

The black population is expected to increase from 41.2 million to 61.8 million over the same period. Its share of the total population would rise slightly, from 13.1 percent in 2012 to 14.7 percent in 2060. The Asian population is projected to more than double, from 15.9 million in 2012 to 34.4 million in 2060, with its share of nation's total population climbing from 5.1 percent to 8.2 percent in the same period.

Among the remaining race groups, American Indians and Alaska Natives would increase by more than half from now to 2060, from 3.9 million to 6.3 million, with their share of the total population edging up from 1.2 percent to 1.5 percent. The Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander population is expected to nearly double, from 706,000 to 1.4 million. The number of people who identify themselves as being of two or more races is projected to more than triple, from 7.5 million to 26.7 million over the same period.

The U.S. is projected to become a majority-minority nation for the first time in 2043. While the non-Hispanic white population will remain the largest single group, no group will make up a majority.

All in all, minorities, now 37 percent of the U.S. population, are projected to comprise 57 percent of the population in 2060. (Minorities consist of all but the single-race, non-Hispanic white population.) The total minority population would more than double, from 116.2 million to 241.3 million over the period.

Projections show the older population would continue to be predominately non-Hispanic white, while younger ages are increasingly minority. Of those age 65 and older in 2060, 56.0 percent are expected to be non-Hispanic white, 21.2 percent Hispanic and 12.5 percent non-Hispanic black. In contrast, while 52.7 percent of those younger than 18 were non-Hispanic white in 2012, that number would drop to 32.9 percent by 2060. Hispanics are projected to make up 38.0 percent of this group in 2060, up from 23.9 percent in 2012.

Other highlights:

The nation’s total population would cross the 400 million mark in 2051, reaching 420.3 million in 2060.

The proportion of the population younger than 18 is expected to change little over the 2012-2060 period, decreasing from 23.5 percent to 21.2 percent.

In 2056, for the first time, the older population, age 65 and over, is projected to outnumber the young, age under 18.

The working-age population (18 to 64) is expected to increase by 42 million between 2012 and 2060, from 197 million to 239 million, while its share of the total population declines from 62.7 percent to 56.9 percent.

Note Bene: These numbers above from the Census Bureau do not include the impact of an amnesty or the Gang of 8 bill. If there is an amnesty or increased immigration under the Gang of 8 bill, this timetable will be accelerated.
