Until Dewhurst was forced into a run-off by 6 challengers, no-one knew anything about Cruz, either.
The money, endorsements, and name recognition comes when Cornyn is forced into a run-off by 7 challengers.

I am very pleased that Ted Cruz was elected in 2012, but IMO if the primaries had run at their normal scheduled times I believe it would have been VERY difficult for him to have accomplished what he did.
Various groups sued claiming the redistricting maps the legislature put in place were unfair or racist or whatever the complaint and the primary in Texas was pushed back many weeks. The Cruz campaign benefited greatly from the delay, his first radio commercial was fantastic and the momentum just built from there.
The Texas 2014 primary is the first week on March, when it historically takes place and early voting is already open, I do not believe that time is on anyone’s side this time except the incumbents.
That being said 7 challengers may split the vote enough to take it to a runoff, but will the electorate coalesce around someone other than Cornyn, I know what everyone hopes but will lightning strike twice in Texas?
Cornyn’s radio adds have been compelling even if most here thing the are tripe, you only have to convince 50% + 1 every six years as a Senator.
