The Florida Panthers faced some high stakes Tuesday; not on the ice, but at Broward County Hall.
With opposition building against the Florida Panthers' request for $86 million for free rent at the county-owned BB&T Center in Sunrise, a majority of county commissioners made it clear at a workshop meeting Tuesday that theyre in favor of a major public giveaway to the hockey team.
New Florida Panthers hockey team owner Doug Cifu said he has no plans to move the team with or without the $86 million bailout he's asking from public, but that didn't stop Broward County Commissioner Marty Kiar from laying out a doomsday scenario if the county doesnt vote in favor of the giveaway.

And in other news, different but in some ways similar the, Public unions in Chicago are saying that taxes need to go up so as to pay for the pension funds.
It seems to come down to the common denominator is that these people want “other people” to pay for their ‘needs’.
maybe if htey lowered their ticket prices then people would buy tickets.
nahh what am I saying. They can just get tax payers to foot the bill.
Hockey man gonna be you boss
Ironic, just saw an article online elsewhere of the former head coach and former Hartford Whaler player Kevin Dineen, who is coaching the Team USA winter olympics women’s team in Sochi and they are going for the gold.
I just need a $250,000 bailout. Where do I apply?
What animated movie had those birds yelling,” mine, mine, mine?”
“Commissioner Marty Kiar from laying out a doomsday scenario if the county doesnt vote in favor of the giveaway”
Doomsday?
Finding Nemo, my kids love that one.
If that hockey team can’t make it go with sales and drawing fans out, it’s time to fold it up. This is ridiculous.
I think that was Finding Nemo.

LOLZ. If we all just believe hard enough, we can get ice hockey in Florida to work.
Year after year the Panthers are at the bottom of the NHL standings if not at the bottom.
They make NO pretence of trying to get any better.
Just soak Sunrise City and Broward County for more and more.
I’ve been to several of their games and usually the visiting team has more fans rooting for them.
Let em move.
And let em take the Marlins with em.
The Dolphins owner is kicking in $$ for Rick Scott’s campaign to get another stadium to replace SunLife/ProPlayer/Joe Robbie...
Panthers attendance is bad...they still offer $7 tickets and free parking?
I thought the Florida panthers were on the endangered species list. Or at least threatened. Now they’re doing the threatening? Ooops. Different panthers. ;>{)
SPORTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What’s more important to the peasantry?

They made the playoffs the year before the lockout season. They signed a number of useful free agents and traded for a big contract in Campbell before that season.
Barkov, Huberdeau, Gudbranson and Bjugstad are the core of an improving team. They might not show it in the W-L record yet but if you watch their games you see the improvement going on. A few more years and this team will be making noise.
The financial issue is a real head-scratcher. A new owner, BLESSED by the NHL, all of a sudden has money issues? Not buying it. Sounds more like a negotiating ploy to me.
When this team is competitive it draws very well. It’s not Florida per se, the Tampa Bay Lightning are drawing fine since they are competitive. The Dolphins were buying large blocks of tickets to avoid a blackout and that when they started 3-0!
And the ability to sell tickets to other team’s fans should be a big benefit. But tickets in the top seats sometimes go for as low as $7 per ticket and the local TV contract is not the best in the league by far. But next year the Rogers Cable contract in Canada kicks in and they get a substantial increase in TV revenue. I suspect that the Broward County Commissioners are not exactly the sharpest knives in the draw when it comes to professional sports finances (although I believe the Dolphins are officially under their jurisdiction too since the stadium is in Miramar, so they should know better).
The premise for putting hockey in south Florida was all the displaced yankees would come out to see the games. That model has failed and all of the ice hockey teams in the southern US are semi-pro farm teams. I say move them to Canada where it’s the number one sport!
Actually, I think Katey Stone coaches Team USA, and Kevin Dineen coaches Team Canada, but I could be wrong.
The only two real sucessful pro teams down in FL that did well has been the Dolphins and the Rays.
