A stretch of the Mojave Desert has been transformed by hundreds of thousands of mirrors into the largest solar power plant of its type in the world, but the milestone is being met with criticism from environmental groups concerned about the effect of solar energy on desert wildlife.

No doubt, some of the same “environmental groups” who rage against fossil fuel....

BrightSource my singed tail feathers!
Tastes like fried chicken.
“...the intense heat surrounding the towers, which can reach 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit”
Man, that’ll really seal in them juices!
Turn some cats loose to clean up the mess!
let’s see: $2.3 billion divided by 140,000 homes =$15k per house. Seems about right. What about the loss during transmission?
Well, there you go. Just have a wind farm pluck ‘em first, and you got it made.
Dear enviros,
This is rich. This was built on your behalf. If you can’t foresee that tiny little fluff-balls of black would instantly crisp in multi-million watt beams of light, which were an essential part of the design, why exactly should we believe that you can model the entire climate with all its myriads of intricacies, and thereby accurately predict doom, unless we do everything you ask for? Like building giant solar furnaces in the deserts where tiny little black, i.e. light-absorbing, birds fly? Hmmm?
Please savor the thought, for a moment here.
And then kindly respond to my question.
Sincerely,

It’s actually in the California desert.
Not my house, it would take over 25 years to pay for it if it did produce 100% of all the electricity i use and we don’t try to conserve energy!
What an eye sore.. Covering the ground with plates of scorching hot panels. Why aren’t environmentalists upset about THAT?
They found like a million fried Spotted Owls at this place.

A typical fossil fueled power plant could produce more energy than this turkey on about 40 acres. This turd is five square miles. Siri just advised me that one square mile is approximately 640 acres, so we have 3,200 acres here. If homesites are quarter acre a piece, this plant covers enough land for maybe 10,000 homes when you allow for infrastructure. Sounds like a terrible deal to me.
Morons.
The same groups who advocate turning America the Beautiful into America the Ugly by erecting those butt ugly wind turbines who also kill birds by the basketful.

It is exactly 640 acres.
