Senator Hopes To Provide Healthcare To Immigrants Lacking Legal Status

by Soumya Karlamangla February 14, 2014

State Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) introduced legislation Friday that would allow immigrants without legal status to receive or buy health insurance through the state.

Such immigrants are the single-largest group of people who remain uninsured under the Affordable Care Act. The national law explicitly bars immigrants without legal status from receiving any kind of federal money, which means that in California, they can't buy insurance through the Covered California exchange, or qualify for the state's low-income health plan, Medi-Cal.

"Healthcare for everyone should mean everyone," Lara said at a news conference Friday in Los Angeles. "Only when we include everyone can we truly have a healthy California."

Lara's bill, SB 1005, proposes that California use state money to expand Medi-Cal eligibility to those who meet the financial requirements -- an annual income of about $15,000 or less for one person -- but have not been able to qualify because of their immigration status.

The bill, which Lara calls "Health for All," also proposes setting up an exchange that would be run by Covered California officials through which immigrants without legal status could purchase insurance. The exchange would also provide the same premium assistance and cost-sharing that Covered California does, but paid for with state money.

"It's better care, and it'll cost us less," he said.

California is home to more than 2 million immigrants who lack legal status, the largest population of any state. Experts predict that five years from now, between 3 million and 4 million Californians will be uninsured, and a quarter of them will be immigrants without papers.

I prefer the term, Illegal Aliens, myself. Or, foreigners. That works as well. Of course, we know what they really are.....Undocumented Democrats.

We should probably give free healthcare to undocumented immigrants still living in Mexico, too. Healthcare is for everyone.

California is a wealthy state. They pay thousands of retired workers over $100k per year. So no problem covering a few million illegals. Do it "for the children".

Hey Ricky! Here’s an idea. Let them get healthcare from their own government you moron. I haven’t seen any “Honk If I’m Paying Your ObamaCare Subsidy” bumper stickers in espanol yet so your idea won’t work!

What we should do is designate people living in third world counties as “less motivated immigrants”. They, of course, need free healthcare and voting rights, without having to show an ID of course. It only seems fair.

We explicitly voted against this exactly 20 years ago.

Prop 187 won with 59% of the vote.

The Mexican Terroristas said “Ju can’t make an eemeegration law in a state” and got the idiot Mariana Pfaelzer to agree with them (Federal judge).

Now they want to make an eemeegration law that explicitly puts their paws into American pockets?

Gee, thought you guys said that was Un-Consteetootional.

Maybe they were referring to the Mexican “constitution”.

Does this guy really believe illegals will have money to pay insurance premiums, copays ,hospital and dr bills? Calif is giving illegals drivers licenses, besides healthcare premiums, this will add to the list , to include car insurance premiums. When it comes right down to it unless it is free or nearly free the illegals earning low wages will not be able to afford insurance of any kind.
