The couple and their five children are fond of unusual animals and urban agriculture.
So the couple found an emu farm near Martinsville and brought home a chick about a year ago and named it Zazu.
Its grown up with our family, Mike Powell said. It started out sleeping in the couples bed. Not the prettiest creature in the world, but we love it, Mike Powell said.
Today, its about 5 feet tall, and looks like a shaggy umbrella on long legs with large, reptilian feet. At the end of a long neck is a head with an expression that looks somewhere between angry and terrified.

One neighbor said he hasnt heard the bird, but another said it has awoken her many times. The two both counted noise among their concerns about the animal. The Powells say it only makes a whistling sound like a robin, but Knappe said he read females make a drumming sound like bongos and males sound like a pig.
The two said theyre concerned about the smell from Zazus droppings, especially as the bird matures and the weather warms, though they said they havent smelled it yet.
Board of Zoning Appeals member Roger Malouf was skeptical that the smell will become a problem if it isnt one already.
A 6-foot bird poops a lot, though, he said. I think if it was pooping around me, I would know about it.
In a time when it’s all bad news and bad weather, this light-hearted story is enjoyable. Please take time to read the article at the link AND especially the comments from the locals. Really too funny. I wouldn’t mind having an emu myself! They seem like a rather cool pet.
Awwww....looks like the comments have been removed. They were getting rather nasty with folks raking one another over the coals due to a BIRD in the neighborhood.
Is this emusing you?
I wonder how many of those complaining about the emu have dogs that they “walk” on other peoples’ property.
Probably most of them. But it only matters when it is being done to “me”.
Now I want an emu.
The complaints sound manufactured, considering there is a six foot closed board fence rather than some type of mesh fencing.
actually yes. why I live away from neighbors fortunately. we can have privacy without busy-bodies bothering us. :)
Anything is better than a peacock.
Emus mate for life, and this bird is probably lonely. It will never find a mate living in someone’s back yard. They can definitely be aggressive. (I have friends who raise them.)
Ahhh, the lovely Peacock. When I was first married we took a job on a horse farm living onsite. I was so excited when I saw the birds...for about 2 days. They are sirens all day long. Eventually they were either all stolen or the horses kicked them to death (a couple I found anyway). Least I was able to gather a few nice feathers.
Actually, it’s making my hungry for some BBQ.
;-)
found another article from a local paper with comments from the owners and a few neighbors...

Cassowaries are easy. My problem has been sneaking past the guards in the Doppleganger mission. I’ve gotten as far as 3/4 of the way through.
An emu bit me when I was stationed in Australia. More like a poke, but it hurt. I seriously squirted him with a hose in revenge. I was on edge of town where the car wash rack was.
Yep. That was tough.
Look up a YouTube tutorial. That’s how I got that level done.
I don’t remember the exact video, but try this:

Truth
A six foot ugly azz bird, that is kewel as hell, poops about as much as a 25# turkey.
I have herds of them things digging uo the lawn in springtime .
I spend a couple weeks hosing their patooties down the sewer.
S not suh bad and I have no idea what it smells be like.
My sense is yer gonna have go on patrol for land mines, about the size of tootsie rolls once a week, as you would with a dog.
Whiners
Lucky it ain’t a female and male peacock. Them things is beautiful but, noisy as hell.
