McConnell, Cornyn help advance debt ceiling increase in Senate

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Whip John Cornyn fell on their swords for Republicans Wednesday, casting the votes necessary to advance legislation to raise the debt limit without any conditions, votes that could put them in precarious positions politically in their re-election campaigns.

The House voted Tuesday to raise the debt ceiling without any strings attached, over the objections of a majority of Republicans. Just 28 Republicans voted for the bill, and it got a poor reception with conservative groups, a number of whom called for Speaker of the House John Boehner to resign.

Cornyn’s fellow Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had a similarly negative reaction to passing the bill without any conditions, and he filibustered it, requiring 60 votes to advance it to a final vote. Senate leaders kept the vote open for an hour, trying to secure enough Republican votes to advance it to a final vote.

When those votes could not be found, McConnell and Cornyn stepped in to cast the necessary votes. Ultimately, 12 Republicans voted in favor of advancing the bill, but according to The Hill, a number of them appeared to switch their votes at the end. The final vote to advance the bill was 67-31.

It appears that Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dumb did so with a huge amount of enthusiasm and determination.

Good.

If this doesn’t FIRE people up to sweep these turds out of the Senate, I can’t imagine what more it would take.

I like the part where McConnell and Cornyn had to walk the plank.
Soon they will be walking over to Trent Lott’s lobbying firm to apply
for a job.

From what I’ve read and heard earlier today, the House tried to attach conditions to the bill but could not get the number of votes needed to pass.

Look at it this way... By passing the bill without conditions, the Republicans have disarmed the Democrats of what they were hoping would be a big hammer for the mid-term elections.

The Democrats are now left holding the bag for increasing the debt and can’t blame Republicans for taking the country to the brink of default or shutdown (which would never happen anyway).

This could easily work out in favor of the Republicans, if they can properly lay responsibility for the increasing debt on the Dems and control both chambers after the elections.

Asked whether he thought McConnell should be replaced as the Republican leader in the Senate, Cruz said: “That is ultimately a decision, in the first instance, for the voters of Kentucky to make.”

There is a quote from my senator, Corker praising McConnell for his
courageous vote. However, Corker does not mention that it took
McConnell 45 minutes to try to arm twist some other GOP sucker before
McConnell found his courage.

John Cornyn
“After five years of out-of-control White House spending, including a jobless, trillion-dollar stimulus, now is hardly the time to give the President carte blanche to continue his spending spree. I voted against raising the debt ceiling because we need sensible reforms to cut down on spending and restrain Washington going forward.”

How can you place the blame on the dems when the GOP leadership voted for it, too? I do not think the American people want the debt limit increased anyhow. the only ones who do are the dems, media, and die hard libs. the GOP has nothing to gain from this however the TEA party will be looking for a bigger broom to sweep the Fraudulent Republicans and their fraudulent Republican think tank RNC to the curb.
Sad I grew up totally believing in true Republican philosophy (it is a philosophical discipline)about life. They do not apply these principles. To them it is nothing but a name, with no meaning other than maybe wearing their ties tighter and keeping a crease in their pants. Meaningless style. I did not leave the Rupublican party, but the RNC and GOP leadership has sure left Republican philosophical principles.

**********************************
What I was alluding to is that the Dems will not be able to claim, before the 2014 mid-terms, that it was the GOP and Conservatives that held up increasing the debt ceiling and putting the country on the brink of ‘default’ (like they have claimed in the past).

That’s what I meant when I indicated the bill passage disarmed the Dems from using that usual lie.

I’m trying to say that the citizens, hopefully, will see that it is the Dems causing increasing debt; not the GOP.

=======================================================

Properly???

The GOP owns this.

Without even offering the slightest protest they wrote out a blank check to the most lawless President is history all so they could hang onto power for themselves in November.

They are more worried about themselves than the future of their country.

Who wants the very bums that got us into this mess to retain power?

They need to go.
