As politicians, bishops take sides, minimum wage raise winners, losers uncertain

Laura Bailey said she used to make $60,000 a year in a government job. Now the 45-year-old makes about $15,600 working fulltime at a fast-food restaurant.

A tragic series of events – job loss, her husband’s death, a serious illness – sent the mother of two spiraling from a comfortable life in Crownsville to homelessness and joblessness. After countless attempts to find clerical work, Bailey took a position in the Arundel Mills outlet mall for $7.80 an hour.

In her off-hours, she’s been an advocate for raising the $7.25 minimum hourly wage, a proposal gaining momentum in the Maryland General Assembly.

The state’s Catholic bishops support an increase in the minimum wage, calling it a matter of human dignity. Bishop Madden testified in support of the measure in the House of Delegates in Annapolis Feb. 11.

Gov. O’Malley and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake stood with religious leaders, including Bishop Madden, Feb. 3 at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Baltimore to call for the wage to rise.

The Maryland Minimum Wage Act proposes to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 incrementally by 2016 and index it to the cost of living.

Represented by the Maryland Catholic Conference, the state’s bishops advocated for a wage increase in a January statement titled “The Dignity of Work.”

“As the state’s largest private social service provider, we witness in our Catholic ministries the painful reality of those who struggle to keep up with the basic costs of food, rent, utilities and transportation,” the bishops said. “This desperate cycle cannot end unless we find a way to give all capable men and women the chance to work at a job through which they can live with true independence and dignity.”

Bailey agrees that a higher wage could make workers feel more valued and motivated.

Unless the restaurant is granted a guaranteed minimum profit, she will earn a minimum wage of $0.00 when the restaurant she works for goes out of business.

The Bible say nothing on the minimum wage.

Where’s the Priest’s compassion for small businesses who don’t have the revenue to cover that increase?

Priests are beggars, not of course, to be confused with buggers.

ObamaCare forces hours to be cut from 40 to 29. Obamabots want the federal minimum wage to rise from $7.25 to $10.10.
40 hours x $7.25/hour = $290.00.
29 hours X $10.10/hour = $292.90.
DUH!

I've got a long-time, respected, valued friend who works for the Maryland Catholic Conference on exactly these kinds of issues. I have tried to tell him that these solutions are neither particularly Catholic nor particularly effective. Together with ObamaCare insurance costs and legalizing ton of illegal immigrants, raising the Minimum Wage is going to bankrupt small employers and put a lot of lowest-rung employees out of work.

I can see this as clear as daylight. Why doesn't my intelligent, honest friend see this?

Pay workers with scrip good only for American-made products—clothes, food, vehicles. Stop paying colleges to train Muzzie and Hindoo engineers and medics to displace home-grown techies.

P.S.to the above, the young male African-American unemployment rate in Baltimore is over 50%. Minimum Wage increase + Amnesty for illegals is going to knock this whole demographic cohort out of the workforce forever. It is evil. It is immoral. It drives me bonkers to see this kind of stuff.

If I were black I think I'd be ready for revolution.

She can’t get a job for anything near what she made as a “government employee?” Sounds like the taxpayers were overpaying her by about $40K a year.

The Catholic Church is, aside from the administration of the sacraments and its non-political charitable activities, a scourge on this country.

As the government moved to fiat money—not a word from “the bishops.”

As taxes, inflation, and costly regulations have destroyed the stay-at-home Mom—not a word from “the bishops.”

As a fascist dictatorship takes hold in Washington—not a word from “the bishops.”

As Nancy Pelosi receives the Margaret Sanger award—not a word from “the bishops”—except for lies about canon law from Cardinal Wuerl. Ted Kennedy LITERALLY SCREAMED (on many occasions) for the blood of 57 million (so far) innocent babies, and had a Cardinal presiding at his gaudy celebrity funeral.

“The bishops” spent several years devising a stupid, Communist-friendly “peace pastoral.” They turned immediately to a stupid, socialistic “economics pastoral.”

Then we found out that 66% of the bishops took active measures for decades, and spent billions, to shield about 4% of priests from the consequences of molesting young males.

Now “the bishops” are campaigning to import 50 million or more pro-abortion voters.

I view my own Church as an enemy of the American People and their Constitution. My own Church is MY ENEMY.

Who appointed this Conga line of weirdos and miscreants? A succession of “saintly” Popes.

And when they decided it was a mistake and unpolitical they rammed the change to put it back in like they voted for Obamacare. But delegates booed the decision. The Democrat is not the party of JFK or even FDR.

It’s a queer hyphenated marriage between socialists and “progressives” They are now Demo-Coms.

Because your friend is not so intelligent and is intellectually dishonest.

He knows nothing about economics, yet deals with economics every day. He thinks that, because economics is about human activity, it is about good intentions. In lefty circles, “economic law” is a term to be scoffed at, as an expression of pure materialism, as fundamentally anti-Christian. Read the incoherent, poisonous ravings of Rupert Ederer to see what I mean. All that is needed is government power exercised with good intentions to produce justice and plenty.

The Catholic Church in America is a handmaiden of government and the Democrat party. Note that Bishop Madden was flanked by TWO PRO-ABORTION POLITICIANS in a Catholic Church as he called for more black youth unemployment.
