Meeting with Greeley’s Rep. Dave Young sparks gun control debate

Meeting with Greeley’s Rep. Dave Young sparks gun control debate

State Rep. Dave Young, D-Greeley, got an earful about gun control during a regular meeting with constituents on Saturday.

Pete Lister, a Navy veteran, told Young — and Joe Perez, a Democratic candidate for Senate District 13 — that restricting gun rights was not the best approach to ensure safety, and the Legislature should shift its focus to improving the counseling system in schools and the medical treatment for those with mental illnesses.

The conversation occurred during Young’s coffee with constituents event at Moreno’s General Store, 322 13th St. in Greeley. Much of the meeting, which drew about 15 people, focused on efforts to protect children from the harmful effects of legalized marijuana and on DUI laws.

The gun control discussion ensued when Perez brought up public safety toward the end of the event. He said it is important for residents to feel they can go into theaters, shopping centers and schools with no fear. The discussion about gun control came as Republicans in the Legislature began another push to repeal a controversial gun control measure from last year. A House committee will hear a proposal to repeal limits to the size of ammunition magazines on Monday. A separate but identical proposal in the Senate is expected to have a committee hearing there Wednesday. Democrats held off an attempt last week to repeal expanded background checks.

Lister said mass shootings are not a gun control issue.

“If you think assault riffles are killing our kids — they aren’t,” he said.

Young said it is important for people to be willing to compromise on the gun control issue.

“People don’t give a little to reach a good result,” he said.

Earlier in the meeting, Young said the question of ensuring children are protected from harmful drugs is a topic that is a huge concern for the Legislature.

He said there is a bill in the Senate now to refine the definition of a drug-endangered child so it can give clearer guidance to law enforcement officials when they encounter these situations.

“If parents are not taking responsibility to care for their children then it is our duty to help the children,” Young said. Adding the issue is broad with no simple solutions.

The discussion then proceeded to drunk driving and DUI laws. Young told attendees that legislators are working to reduce the number of deaths related to driving under the influence. He said the tool of revoking a driver’s license is not efficient because those individuals don’t care if they have a license or not when getting behind the wheel.

“We are looking for effective ways to change their behavior,” Young said

I went ahead and signed up for the one day subscription, so I could post the whole article here. So if you click on the source you'll probably only get a couple of sentences. I don't think there are any copyright issues.

This is the guy I've talked about running against, if I didn't have so many skeletons.

He's a nice guy, I've had a couple of email conversations with him, but he has no business representing northern Colorado.

Make gun ownership illegal and legalize drugs. That’s one heck of a “fundamental transformation” Colorado has going there. Sounds like something they would have done in the old, obsolete Soviet Union.

Compromise means give and take. The gun controllers have been taking and taking with no giving for decades. Sorry, no sale.

“Compromise means give and take. The gun controllers have been taking and taking with no giving for decades. Sorry, no sale.”

Worth repeating. “Compromising” with the left means they get to take something and you get to give something. We have gone so far into “Compromise” it is hard to see anything left to give that does not fundamentally chip away at the right to keep and bear arms.

Still, I will give it a try.

A compromise: Allow adults between the ages of 18 and 21 to buy pistols from federally licensed dealers, but only if they have attended a class on gun safety. The class can be no more than four hours long.

They get to have young adults attend a class before buying a pistol from a dealer; we get young adults to be able to buy a pistol from a dealer.

I guarantee that they will never accept this compromise.

Rat: You are never willing to compromise with us on gun control.

GOP: What do you want?

Rat: Complete confiscation of all guns.

GOP: NO way. Never gonna happen.

Rat: See, you're unwilling to compromise.

That's about right.

I guess I should say it here, too: Congrats to Rep. Brian DelGrosso on the birth of his new son. I've known Brian and his wife Amber for about 10 years. Used to work for them at Domino's.

Compromise now, compromise in a year compromise in five years and eventually it will be a complete ban.

That is the way gun laws work. They proponents don’t take into account all of the previous compromises and existing laws.
