Start from the premise that Wendy Davis probably was going to lose the election against Greg Abbott no matter what.
But probably wasnt a sure thing. Abbott never was in Edwin Edwards territory: The only way I can lose this election is if Im caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy.
It didnt help that Daviss narrative of being a struggling teenage single mom who brought herself up by her bootstraps all the way to Harvard Law School fell apart.
Davis always had the base, and maybe if she got lucky, if Republican turnout was low, and she seriously motivated Democrats, maybe, just maybe, she could click her pink sneakers together and eek out a win.
That once upon a time hope may have vanished with Davis obvious pandering in bucking the Democrats and coming out in favor of an Open Carry law.
The Texas Tribune reports on the shock from Democrats, Davis Takes Friendly Fire on Gun Issue
The base is furious.
At the appropriately named left-wing blog Crooks and Liars, one Juanita Jean is so furious shes furious in the third person, Juanita Jean Is Mad As Hell At Wendy Davis:
"Theres very little talk among political junkies in Texas this morning about anything else except Wendy Davis stunning and unexpected announcement that she favors open carry in Texas .
Its pandering plain and simple. I know that no candidate is going to agree with me about 100% of things. However, I do expect the candidates I support to be honest with both me and themselves. We have lost every statewide race in Texas since Elvis died because our political consultants say we have to pander to the right wing to win .
Let me tell you one thing. Given a choice between a Real Republican and a Democrat who talks like a Republican, Republicans will pick the Real Republican every damn time. And your base Democrats will stay at home. I have statistics to prove that.
As Paul Begala says, Texas is not a Republican state. Texas is a non voting state. And the non voters are Democrats who have had nothing to vote for.
Wendy Davis did not get national attention by pandering to Republican voters. She got it by talking to the base .
It is mid February. If this campaign doesnt get back on track soon, its over. Weve sacrificed another Democrat to a nonexistent persuadable Republican, when all we had to do is excite the base in urban areas and South Texas.
I feel sure her campaign is telling her, Whats your base going to do? Vote for Abbot? They wont do that because hes worse for them than you are. No, they wont vote for Abbott. They just wont vote and that is the worst thing you can do to Texas.
Your base is running away, Wendy. You better find where they are going so you can lead them there."
Wow, that was a satisfying read. Joan of Argghh is on her way to get a cigarette.
You cant count Davis out. But my guess is that on election day there will be a lot of Democrats sitting home smoking cigarettes, and not bothering to vote.
She killing cookie sales not to mention those she supports killing in the womb...
C’mon, Wendy, get on yer fetal pink sneakers...
I trust Wendy as much as if she promised, “If you like your firearms, you can keep your firearms”.
Nice to see a democrat flame out for a change.
As Paul Begala says, Texas is not a Republican state. Texas is a non voting state. And the non voters are Democrats who have had nothing to vote for.
This statement is fairly easy to turn around and explain Obama’s two victories. “The country is not a Democrat majority country. America is a non-voting country. And the non voters are Republicans who had nothing to vote for.”
Here is another line from the article that could be turned around:
“Let me tell you one thing. Given a choice between a Real Republican and a Democrat who talks like a Republican, Republicans will pick the Real Republican every damn time. And your base Democrats will stay at home. I have statistics to prove that.”
Just switch the words “Republican” and “Democrat” in that passage. Sensible people on either side GET IT.
Maybe that relationship is correct, maybe it's not. The "every" part is definitely not, as far as Governors go -- I knew Ann Richards was a Dem, and I see on wikipedia that there was another Dem governor elected after 1977 as well.
But what I found most surprising is that "the trend is your friend" on Governors at least. Dem Governors every one of 'em from 1874 through 1973, then four out of the last six have been Republicans. And it's looking good for five out of seven.
Ain’t that the truth. I’m already seeing Freepers threatening to sit out the next election, even after the 2012 disaster proved that’s what has put our country firmly in the ruins of Socialism.
While the “Professor” may understand voting dynamics, he needs an editor: “eek out” vs. “eke out” — seriously???
As to Davis, the attempt to become a Texas-style populist by running as fast as she can to get in front of the band is not leadership. I find it funny how a yellow-dog Demo can see that plainly yet Repubs have to suffer the likes of Rove.
Sure wish it were so. Case in point - WV.
This was just a probe - a dry run for the RATS. They want Texas and with the help of the national media - it’s within reach for them.
Abortion Barbie lied about her bgrnd (she pounded the sheets to
get money)---now seen in an awkward pose w/ a shotgun (guys,
beware...she's aiming at your crotch).
NY Gov Blowmo stupidly said he didn't want conservatives in his state---Dumbo just gave gun ranges a state grant.
“And the non voters are Republicans who had nothing to vote for.”
The media and states that allow cross-voting primaries get to pick our candidates. All states need to primary at the same time.
I like the 5 10 state primary idea.
5 primary dates with 10 regionally diverse states voting on the same day. 2 north, 2 south, 2 east, 2 west and 2 central states drawn by lottery to determine which states would vote in each.
The general problem is that half of all Democrats in Texas....already carry weapons, and won’t discuss any changes to that feature of state law. If you were running for governor as a Democrat...either you avoid the topic or you embrace it. Saying you want gun control....says adios to half the Democratic voters in the state.
Why do Democrats stay home on election day? Its a work day silly, Democrats always stay home on work days.
From what I'm hearing from my Austin dem relatives, the support from the faithful so far has been underwhelming....
As a Texan her filibuster didn’t even register that high with the local news. She was not and is not any kind of political super star that grabs mass appeal. “I love to kill babies” is not a great political theme, for either party, here.
The national left made her a far bigger deal than she actually is.
For ‘WINDY’ Davis
With alpologies to The Association:
Who’s peekin’ out from under a stairway
Calling us names that’s leftist de jour
Who’s bending down to flash me a rainbow
Everyone knows it’s Windy
Who’s tripping down the streets of ole Austin.
Smilin’ at all the hippies she sees
Who’s reachin’ out to cause an abortion
Everyone knows it’s Windy
And Windy has stor-my eyes
That flash at the sound of her own lies
And Windy spouts crap with flies
Head in the clouds (Head in the clouds)
Head in the clouds (Head in the clouds)
