Yoruba, not Xhosa. The Xhosa live in South Africa.
Thanks for the correction. It has been a long time since I’ve seen the tribes names all together. My Anthropology professor in the 1960’s lived with them, and a friend of mine in grad school was a minister in the Biafran government..
The news reports from Nigeria usually don’t identify the tribes who are involved in violence, as either the perpetrator or the victim. They describe it as generally a Muslim versus Christian affair, though it definitely has historical rivalry overtones.
A real tragedy for the people of Nigeria, who, in the words of Marlin Brando, “I (they) could have been a contender” for the most democratic and organized country in Africa.
Today Nigeria is a real potential outpost into the heart of Africa for Al Qaeda-linked groups (from Mali and Niger, among other countries nearby).
