Cheerios was pretty much the same message

I didn't think so. I thought the Cheerios message was little more than "cute family, eats Cheerios." Nothing wrong with that.

I agree with you. The hype before the cherios commercial was aired created the controversy, not the commercial itself. It was just a short period of benign entertainment in a boring superbowl.
