Evans is a victim of the society that built her...

Here it is yet again, the old "she's a woman so she must be a victim" refrain.

No. Try this instead: She is not a victim. She is an adult who is fully responsible for her own actions. Society did not do this to her. She CHOSE to do it. She CHOSE to get married, she CHOSE to get pregnant by her husband, and she CHOSE to have their fetus killed without even informing the father. She is an exalted being in modern America, an Empowered Feminist. I am woman, hear me roar, and just flush those bloody little body parts down the drain.

The only victims here are her fetus and her fool of an ex-husband.

The only way to restore an American future is to restore the social and religious institutions that fostered genuine American values.

Great idea. Best of luck with that.

I understand what you are saying, but I would suggest you are railing too much against a metaphor. The point of the article is not that Evans "is a woman and therefore she must be a victim", it's that Evans and all of her generation, male and female, are products of a society that OK's selfish and self-destructive behavior by removing the bad consequences of said behavior. The attitudes she has are her own, but they are only a product of what she has been taught. In that sense it IS society's fault, because all of us are either enthusiastically pushing those values, or allowing them to exist.

The only way to restore an American future is to restore the social and religious institutions that fostered genuine American values.

This statement is exactly true. And your sarcastic rejoinder to it is also exactly true - its probably impossible to restore the attitudes that made America great, but then who ever said that maintaining the great American Republic would be easy? The founding fathers never thought so. Evan's behavior, and that of millions of others, is slowly poisoning American society, but its a very sweet poison, which is why it keeps getting taken. Who doesn't want to do what they want? Who doesn't want to avoid bad consequences? Of course, we know here that freedom and rights are impossible to have without a corresponding amount of responsibilites and duties, but an ever increasing number of our fellow citizens consider duty and responsibility to be boring and hard work and somebody else's job.
