A defiant Mayor de Blasio is vowing to go full speed ahead with plans to raise taxes on the citys highest earners to pay for universal pre-K even as Gov. Cuomo is offering to have the state foot the bill.
De Blasio not only insisted his five-year tax hike was the only way to ensure a reliable stream of funding, but said he felt obligated to enact the will of those who voted him into City Hall.
I think of it in terms of following through on a commitment I made to the people of New York City, that they ratified with great energy and with a huge majority, that they want this to happen and believe this is the right way forward, said the mayor.
Cuomos proposal calls for pre-K funding to grow over five years by a total of $1.5 billion across the state. The proposal is likely to help Albany legislators make the case that approving a tax hike for the city isnt necessary this year when many of them, including Cuomo, are up for re-election.
The mayors unwillingness to bend on the tax hike sets the stage for a significant rift with Cuomo, for years a close ally.

Time to invest in moving company equities.
Actually I can find no fault with this.
He was very open during the campaign that he wanted to do this.
The people of New York elected him anyway.
Obviously it’s what they want.
He is showing more integrity than the average pol in sticking by his promise.
If all the producers now flee New York the voters have only themselves to blame.
This is how democracy works. Sometimes is effs-up very badly. If the public schools have not dumbed them down too far, perhaps the electorate will actually learn something from this painful experience.
NYC’s limo libs get to pay more, the way they claim they’ve always wanted to do.
LOL, ENJOY your new mayor NYC...you deserve him
Just to remind folks our president has the same ideology and wants the same thing.
It’s a good thing the rats are fighting with each other. Otherwise, things might get done—bad things.
That he wanted Pre-K or that he wanted to raise taxes?

Fifty-one, 52 percent of our taxes come from people making $500,000 or more, Bloomberg said. In 2006, 5,000 people paid 30 percent of the taxes in New York City. If only 1,500 of that 5,000 people move to Connecticut, that would cut 10 percent of our tax base, thats another $3.5 billion.
Perhaps, but its not the way a Constitutional republic using democracy as a tool is supposed to work.
The difference? Its acceptable for six guys and a girl to have a binding, majority rule, vote on what to put on the pizza that they are all sharing. Its not acceptable for them to have a similar vote on who is going to be having sex with whom.
The fundamental problem with graduated taxation is that it encourages the majority to abuse the minority, and theft is theft, whether or not you vote on it first.
Like Detroit, they will suffer the consequences of an unjust, socialist, mob rule system.
For sure, first chance he gets, Sean Hannity is going to decamp altogether from NYC, where he has based his radio and TV shows for several years now.
Just as Glenn Beck did a couple years back.
But Cuomo called his bluff by saying the state would pay for pre-K. Now he wants to raise taxes anyway. Showed his true colors.
classic
2 liberals arguing over who will run up and then pay the check - with other peoples’ money
Whether the city channels the money, or it is issued from state coffers, it is still TAXPAYERS footing the bill. Biggest difference is that deBlasio can only indenture the residents of the city.
New York City is doomed with this clown at the helm. And, New York State is in deep trouble, also, with Cuomo in Albany.
Bet the Hannitys move to a state with no state income tax. More power to him. Hannity has been a friend to FR.
The voting majority wanted Obama, so now we will all suffer for it. Thing is, as a whole most Americans learn from a mistake. NY city and and state have made this same kind of mistake year in, year out. Never learning. And please don’t point to the RINO Reps out as an example
I have to give him this much-I wish our “conservative” representatives were as defiant and obstinate in carrying out the wishes of the people who voted for them.
When David Dinkins was mayor and the city was dominated by black activism and unrest, a lot of people and businesses fled. The problem for NYC is that there are too many nearby alternatives for businesses and taxpayers; a friend described how many businesses with NYC addresses simply have shell offices there; the staff (the consumers/taxpayers) are elsewhere.
I can find fault with this. Theft is theft. If one person is robbed/taxed who did not vote for their own destruction then this is an outrage. Majority rul does not determine morality. NEVER. Just because he was open about what he weanted to do, tnen followed through does not make him a paragon of virtue.
