Rep. Gohmert drops health coverage, blames Obamacare

WASHINGTON — Lots of conservative lawmakers hate Obamacare. Rep. Louie Gohmert is putting his money where his mouth is.

The Tyler Republican gave up his health insurance for 2014, asserting that the president’s signature health care law, the Affordable Care Act, has made coverage too expensive.

“Other people are going to see what I did when I looked into health insurance for my wife and me: that the deductible rate, it doubled, about $3,000 to $6,000, and our policy was going to go from about $300 to about $1,500 a month,” he said during a recent radio interview with Trey Graham, a pastor at First Melissa Baptist Church in Collin County. “I actually don’t have insurance right now, so thank you very much, Obamacare.”

Gohmert’s salary as a member of Congress is $174,000 a year. And his calculations ignore the hefty employer subsidy for which he is eligible — almost $950 per month. He says he will pay the tax that takes effect this year for those without insurance — 1 percent of his annual income.

He had health insurance for $300 a month?

We paid our own and it was twice that much - and that was before ObamaScare kicked in.

Who will pay his hospital bill this year if he is unfortunate to have one?

Expect more of this to happen...and folks with Gohmert’s salary aren’t getting subsidies for insurance either

It is up to the American people to DEMAND that ObamaCare be repealed.

Same people who’ve been paying for illegals to use our emergency rooms, contributing to this bankruptcy of our health care system.

He and all taxpayers.

You think he’s the only one?

What healthy 27 year old would purchase this stupid deal, thousands per month, thousands in deductibles?

Who’s going to pay for all of it.

People really expect doctors to work for free.

We’ve been using the term free medical care. It’s not free. WE’re paying.

"We’ve been using the term free medical care. It’s not free. WE’re paying."

Righto. But does Obamacare end free medical care?

There is no free medical care.

A couple making $500G will eventually pay a $12,000 penalty for not participating.

It is not going to go over.

His employer, in this case the federal government, probably paid 75or 80 percent of the premiums.

But for months, he’s said he would rather give up his government-supplied insurance than accept any government subsidy.

If he paid only $300 a month before then that meant 75 or 80 percent was subsidized by his employer, the federal government. Why didn't he have a problem with that subsidy in the past?

Our rep told us the govt picks up $7,500 of his annual premium. I don’t know how I feel about it. If he worked for Coca Cola or IBM they would be picking up some or all of his insurance premium.

It's understandable. Every other federal employee has his or her health insurance heavily subsidized, same with people in the private sector. Why should congressmen and senators and their staffs have been any different?

But if the story is accurate, Gohmert would get a subsidy of over $10k for health insurance costs. So is his beef that the subsidy has gone up? It can't be because his health care costs are subsidized because the always have been.

Our guy is single no kids. Louie has a wife and I guess kids so I’m assuming thats why his premium is higher.
