Pollution from China Reaches U.S., According to New Study

The pollution that reaches the West Coast is largely a by-product of production of consumer goods for the U.S. and Europe.

It’s the first study to measure exactly how much of the Chinese pollution reaching the U.S. West Coast is from the production of items for the U.S., like cell phones, televisions, and electronics.

“We’ve outsourced our manufacturing and much of our pollution, but some of it is blowing back across the Pacific to haunt us,” said U.C. Irvine Earth system scientist Steve Davis, a co-author of the study. “Given the complaints about how Chinese pollution is corrupting other countries’ air, this paper shows that there may be plenty of blame to go around.”

Black carbon pollution is a particular concern because rain doesn’t easily wash it out of the atmosphere. It hangs around in the air for a long time and has been linked to increases in asthma, emphysema, and lung disease according to the study.

And it seems that almost every day there is a new little gadget created that we simply cannot exist without, so we mindlessly rush out to buy it. And a month later it’s made obsolete by another little gadget.

“production of consumer goods for the U.S. and Europe.”

China has twice the consumer population of US and Europe combined. Is this not pollution for consumption in China?

Come now, have you not learned by now that it is we of the rich elite nations that are guilty of everything? Why if we did not demand these consumer goods China would be a utopia and there would be no pollution from them at all!
