Making a rare Ocala visit on the eve of the holiday recognizing black Americas greatest civil rights leader, U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown exhorted members of a predominantly black church on Sunday to remain politically vigilant, lest the gains made by minorities over the past 50 years be reversed.
Appearing at the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopalian Church, the Jacksonville Democrat warned that inertia and indifference by black voters, especially young people, could lead to setbacks on voting rights, health care, education and other issues.
Yet it also mattered at the lowest levels of government, and in elections farther down the ballot, she said.
Any day you dont vote we dont win, Brown said. Our work is not done, and theres work for each and every one of us.
Just showing up makes a difference, she added later.
And while Brown did not mention Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by name, she insisted the political strides made by blacks over the last half-century were attributable to leaders who were willing to challenge the existing power structure.
You have to elect people who know why theyre in the room, because theyre not just in the room because theyre so pretty, or theyre so fine or theyre so smart. She is a beneficiary of the racist double standard of Black Race Privilege. Her congressional district was drawn up to ensure a black majority that will always give a black racist block vote to a black candidate.
