The “nun” broke her vows. She went back to El Salvador where she had sex with an old boyfriend. At that point, she should have not returned and pretended to be a nun.
She didn’t break her vows. She took her vows in September. She was already pregnant at the time.
>>The nun broke her vows.>>
No, she didn’t. The article states that:
“...as she took her vows and became a nun in the order last September.”
That means that she was almost five months pregnant when she joined the order. And that no doubt means that she was less than honest with the Sister Superior when she joined the order.
I do not know the requirements for every order of nuns on earth. Perhaps if she had truly repented for sex outside marriage, and did not know at that early date in the pregnancy that she was “with child,” her particular order might have accepted her. But, if she had missed periods as pregnant women usually do, then she should NOT have applied for acceptance to the religious order.
But once her vows were made, there’s no reason to say that she broke them.
From the linked article:
Massimo Casciani, spokesman for the local bishop of Rieti, monsignor Delio Lucarelli, said: 'At some point the bishop will visit the nun but at the moment he has not yet seen here.
'We shall be investigating the circumstances behind - the child could be the fruit of a consensual rapport but it could also have been as a result of violence. That's why we need to investigate properly.'
