one little 8 oz thing of oysters COSTS EIGHT BUCKS!

Wow! $8 bucks!

How much do fresh ones cost in the seafood section, if it's about the same, I'm sure they would be better.

My mom (German) used to make oyster soup and I didn't really like it. It was basically cooked potato, milk and butter served with saltines.

If I was to craft such a dish, I think the first thing I would do is locate a good old Maine Clam Chowdah recipe and use oysters instead of clams.

It has a much more substantial constitution overall and is almost decadent in it's flavor...real nice when you come in from the cold.

Here's the basics:

2 cups of canned minced clams, chopped clams or baby clams or a combination of any or all, then well drain (save juice from canned clams to cook potatoes in)
1 tablespoon of granular garlic or two garlic cloves mashed and finely chopped
6 strips of bacon very finely chopped (freeze before chopping)
1/2 medium sweet onion finely chopped
1-1/2 lbs of red potatoes diced less than 1/2” pieces, peeled if you wish
2 cups of finely chopped potatoes (in addition to the 1.5 lbs)
2 teaspoons of finely chopped fresh basil
1/2 teaspoon of ground thyme
1/2 teaspoon of ground rosemary
1 quart of heavy cream
1/4 lb of salted butter
1/2 cup of sour cream
Oyster crackers

Is that killer or what? I think I'll have to make some. You will want to scale it down if you just have a couple of people. I'll post the link below for the specific details.

Hey Rock you are having potato stew with that recipe! Substitute Fla. Lobster for the potatoes and you are there buddy.

Real Clam Chowder: 2lbs or more of steamers or little necks soaked and steamed with chopped yellow onion.

Drain the clams reserve the stock.

Shell the clams.

12oz of diced salt pork fried in 8oz of butter until crispy.

Last nights mashed potatoes.

One quart light cream, one quart heavy cream.

Fry salt pork.

Bring stock, shelled clams, salt pork, and some more onion to a boil then lower to a simmer.

Cook until onion dissolves.

Add cream and another 8oz of butter, thicken with mashed potatoes to taste.

Real Down East chowder.

Serve with Oyster Crackers.

I am all good with this Rock L but go with fresh and organic veggies and herbs , you can buy the Atlantic clam juice in a mini old coke like bottle but tx for the recipe! Awesome! I grow my own herbs and dry them of these long cold winters.

PS my fish guy sells his own clam juice.. even bettah!
