The Next Frontier in Fertility Treatment (NYT alert)
New York Times ^ | January 12, 2014 | SARAH ELIZABETH RICHARDS

ANDY INKSTER, a transgender man, had always wanted biological children. So when he embarked on the transition from female to male at age 18 — changing his name, taking testosterone and eventually undergoing surgery to remove his breasts — he left his female reproductive organs intact.

In his mid-20s, he decided it was time. He stopped taking testosterone and started trying to get pregnant. Eventually, in 2009, after beginning graduate school at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, he sought fertility treatment at Baystate Reproductive Medicine. Baystate was one of the few clinics in the country with an anti-discrimination policy for gender identity. And yet, it refused to treat him, arguing that it didn’t have enough expertise to treat transgender patients. Mr. Inkster insisted there was no medical reason to deny him; his baby-making parts were the same as any woman’s.

The more than 700,000 transgender people living in the United States have long faced discrimination by health care providers. Over the past 15 years, activists have fought to compel insurers to cover transgender-related health care — from hormone therapy to gender reassignment surgery — or at least be prevented from excluding transgender clients from buying policies for basic services. Finally, starting this month, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, “transsexualism” can no longer be considered a pre-existing condition. What’s been left out of the spotlight: having babies. Many Americans have come to accept gay parents; the transgender community is next in line for recognition.

Mr. Inkster eventually found another clinic that helped him conceive via in vitro fertilization and donor sperm, and in October 2010, he gave birth to a daughter, Elise. A month later, he sued Baystate for sexual discrimination.

SHE could become pregnant and give birth because SHE is a woman. The "transgender" movement seems to be about creating maximum confusion and legal bills.

Ahhhhhhh, no. She gave birth to a daughter. No male has ever given birth as I understand it.

This “guy” needs a psychiatrist. If “he” wants to get pregnant and give birth, “he” is a “she.”

In the natural order of things, there is a price to pay for perversion.

Naturally (or rather “unnaturally”), the NYT seek to lesson the cost of sin, as lowering the cost of sin serves their purposes of creating more sin.

What does the People’s Front of Judea have to say about this situation?

No matter how much you are butchered and carved up like a turkey, you’re still a man if you were born with man parts. You’re still a woman if you were born with woman parts. If you want to butcher your body and fill up with hormones fine by me. I’m just absolutely sick and disgusted that I have to pay for it.

Chromosomes have nothing to do with gender. Having only X chromosomes does not make you a woman. Having X and Y chromosomes does not make you a man. Your FEELINGS are what define whether you are a man or a woman or whatever you care to define yourself as being.

And anyone who disagrees is a bigot.

Ha. Haven't heard of that in forever. A cart salesman I knew used to sell these on the beach in Israel.

Nothing surprising here, women can bear children, even if they call themselves men, that is all. The real horror is that there is no fundamental reason why a female cannot impregnate another female if sperm can be artificially generated from her stem cells. I suspect that within ten years we will see a human being born by non-heterosexual reproduction, God help us.

I am getting too damn old to understand these things. I read that transgendered people feel like a mistake was made.. that they are really male (or female) inside. The outside and sexual organs don’t match what they feel they are. Okay.. got it. Don’t understand it but I got it. Then this: she was female. Felt she was male. Got the female outside parts changed to male. Then she wanted to get pregnant and give birth? But she wanted to give birth as a man vs a female but using a uterus? .... I have a headache now.

Truly shameful. This is pure selfishness at the expense of the child. How confused will this child be growing up?

“Jennifer Hastings, a family care physician based in Santa Cruz, Calif., who specializes in transgender health care, says it’s tricky to balance gender identity with family desires. “We have preteens who come in and say, ‘I don’t want to be a mom. I want to be a dad!’ ” she says.”

I’m SURE this happens ALL the time.
