Scientists to create controlled nuclear meltdown in Ibaraki facility

National Jan. 12, 2014 - 03:20PM JST

TOKYO — A team of nuclear scientists in Japan plan to create a controlled reactor meltdown in a bid to learn how to deal with future disasters like that at Fukushima.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency said it was working on a project using a scaled-down version of a reactor which they would deliberately cause to malfunction at a research facility in Ibaraki, north of Tokyo.

“We want to study exactly how meltdowns happen and apply what we will learn to help improve ways to deal with severe accidents in the future,” said a spokesman for the government-backed engineering agency.

controlled reactor meltdown

In light of what happened in Fukushima for last two(three?) years, I am not comfortable with their ability to 'control it.' Come to think of it, Chernobyl disaster was said to have started with a little experiment which ran out of control.

Howsabout you just put yer standby generators ABOVE GROUND. (Rather than in what amounts to a swimming pool.)
After all, without them when the batteries run down, Poof: there’s yer meltdown—again.

Chernobyl WAS caused by a test that went awry. But Several things all contributed to it, the two biggest being the physics of THAT reactor design and NOT following the outlined procedure to conduct it. Had they stayed within the boundaries of the procedure, it would not have happened.

Howsabout executing the environazis who, through political force, overrode the scientists who insisted this location was too dangerous and that it should have been built higher, and further from the sea?

Research has shown that these tests always go much better if all involved are drunk. Bring on the saki!

Step 1: Get drunk.
Step 2: Get nuclear reactor kit.
Step 3: Do what you feel like.
Step 4: Run!!!
