Chilling. I never heard of this side of Jack London when I was in school. "More Chinese than white people...", London, the socialist atheist could never get away with these racist sentiments at US Berkeley nowadays...he'd be outnumbered.

Was he prescient? Could the ultimate battle be with China. Their killing of female infants, their scouring the Earth for resources, their land grabs in Africa and South America, their ravenous appetite for food, minerals and energy have put them on a collision course with the rest of the world. Now they arrogantly threaten their neighbors. How does this resolve?

“Out of their native optimism and race-egotism they had therefore concluded that the task was impossible, that China would never awaken.”

Simply not true.

Napoleon said, “China? There lies a sleeping giant Let her sleep, for when she wakes up She will move the world”

I remember reading it some years ago. One of the most appalling things I ever read. What he coolly describes is 100X worse than the Nazi murder rampage.

Jack London was a hard-core socialist “progressive” as well as a vicious racist. “Jacobus” is obviously speaking for London himself.

The so-called Chinese “Eastern” mind is nothing more than what you get with centuries of grinding zero democracy mandarinism, impenetrable caste/class social boundaries, concentration of wealth and knowledge in the hands of a ruling elite, inbred self-cannibalizing conceptual frameworks and a worship of the past and its pantheon of ancestors. In this regard, the West was as much trapped in Easternness as any oriental society until the period of the Florentine Renaissance in 15th century Tuscany. How and why Europe changed from “Easternness” to “Westernness” is a fascinating study.

The Western mind penetrated the Chinese mind but a short distance when it found itself in a fathomless maze

Kinda like people from Pittsburgh?
