Standard and well-known procedures such as cataract surgery or hip replacements not only save lives, but money. A person who is able to walk, see, etc. is a person who ultimately costs less in care and in many cases a person who is then able to go on working or being productive.

Many, many people who fall into the “senior” category work, at least part-time, and of course self-employed people usually keep on working until they drop. Making this common surgery unobtainable by them is going to lower their income and make them more dependent and costly. But I guess that’s only if they’re allowed to stay alive, which is the next question on Obama’s agenda.
