I recall that now. I was going off memory, but in my notes I had written my opinion that the consulate was being 'surveilled'. Whether it was a genuine officer or not, it was surveillance. Tragically, Sean Smith notes this in his chat with another gamer just as the group began gathering outside the gates.

Your link says Sean Smith called him a guard not the police. That conforms better to my memory of the early stories. I thought it was said at the time that the 'spy' was one of the February 17th Martyr's Brigade that was hired for security but I may be mistaken about that.

Maybe it's a fine distinction with no real point to be made. There is a Fox News report from Sep. 12th, 2012 that says Smith's online message referred to the 'spy' as a policeman.
