A southeastern North Dakota town narrowly escaped tragedy when a train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded nearby, the mayor said Tuesday, calling for changes in how the fuel is transported across the U.S.
No one was hurt in Mondays derailment of the mile-long train that sent a great fireball and plumes of black smoke skyward about a mile from the small town of Casselton. The fire had been so intense as darkness fell that investigators couldnt get close enough to count the number of burning cars. The National Transportation Safety Board was preparing to investigate. .Most residents heeded a recommendation to evacuate their homes as strong winds blew potentially hazardous, acrid smoke toward the town overnight, Mayor Ed McConnell said early Tuesday.
I drove in this morning and looked like most people had left. There werent a lot of lights on, McConnell said.
The North Dakota Department of Health warned that exposure to burning crude could cause shortness of breath, coughing and itching and watery eyes. It had said those in the vicinity with respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis or emphysema should minimize outdoor activity.
Health experts were testing the air quality.

I’d love to see the entire route this train was taking and how many small towns it passed through.
I heard both trains belong to the Oracle of Omaha.
I guess the Keystone will be approved shortly.
The media has reported that the one carrying the oil was one of the Buffet trains.
Wonder if he gets a pass for killing people the way big wind gets a pass on killing birds?
No one died.
It was eastbound so it would pass right through my city, Fargo. 100,000 people. Yeah, I’d like like to see a pipeline completed if nothing else, I’m tired of waiting for endless oil trains to pass through.
Any of you folks consider enviro-terrorism by those removing a few rail spikes?
Train wrecks involving oil are suddenly on the rise.
That is the real reason that the Keystone Pipeline has not been approved. Obama’s friend, Buffet, makes a fortune moving oil with his trains. Keystone would affect Buffet’s bottom line.
All you have to do is follow the money to see why most people do the things that they do.
If we were REALLY a law abiding nation, we'd be able, as citizens, to protect OUR property and terrorism would greatly diminish or disappear.
Just further proof that we need more windmills and solar panels. NOT!
Well, I am sure this will be taken care of by Lord Obama next week after his NTSB releases the results of their thorough investigation into this accident. He will ban the transportation of crude oil by rail. THAT should damn near shut down the new oil rushing to market and save the OPECers.
Not this time.
from what I’ve read,
Soros owns rail lines.
If you only allow rail to transport not pipe
you do the math.
Casselton may be a small town (about 1500 people), but it is home town to at least five former North Dakota Governors. It is also near the geographical center of Cass County, the most populous county in the state.
Until, that is, the Greenies blow it up to prove how dangerous it is!
I hate to sound selfish (but it appears no one was hurt by this disaster so..): is this why gasoline prices seem to have taken a bit of an uptake lately, because of the loss of all that oil? Is the market that sensitive to such small variations?
Anyone know?
