With the end of the year upon us, it is time to honor an American who stood for this nations highest ideals in 2013.
A week ago, we listed ten nominees. The selection drew immediate comment from Times readers, and suggestions for additional names. One of these gets a very special mention. His name is Marcus Luttrell, the author of Lone Survivor. He was a Navy Seal who was part of an operation in Afghanistan called Operation Red Wing. He and his teammates were sent on a dangerous mission to capture or kill an important Taliban leader. Their mission was compromised when they ran into some goat herders. Instead of killing them or even aborting the mission, they continued on. Three of the four team members were killed. The teams leader, Lt. Michael Murphy, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism.
Marcus Luttrell has given more than any American could be asked to give. He was at the tip of the spear for many years and he deserves recognition. The movie Lone Survivor opens in January.
An honorable mention goes to another real American: Phil Robertson. Robertson did something very simple and very profound.
Robertson is a man of deep religious beliefs. When those beliefs were mocked and attacked by liberal bullies in the media, he simply refused to surrender. He stood up for his beliefs.
Robertson did what generations of Americans before him did; they refused to be cowed. By simply standing up for his beliefs, he pushed the bullies on the other side into collapse. Millions of Americans rallied around the Duck Commander and showed their support for him and for liberty in America.
That brings us to the winner of the real American award for 2013: Ted Cruz.

Just give me Ted.
BTW, representing all Texans, I accept the thanks from all conservatives of foisting this Senator onto you in 2013.
Soon to be repeated on March 4 (only 8 weeks away!). Except now we’ll be lubricating with RINO tears.... so sweet.
Besides Ronald Reagan, my vote for Ted Cruz was the best vote I've cast to date.
Hopefully we will primary John Cornyn out of the senate and place another conservative. Let's roll!
He is a gem and one to be proud of. Makes me wish I was a Texan - on the other hand I ALWAYS wanted to be a Texan. Great gun state.
Cruz is my # 1 choice for President in 2016.
