Thinking about cutting class in Michigan? Make sure you know someone with whom you can hitch a ride.

A state representative wants to revoke driver’s licenses for chronically absent students as part of an initiative to cut down on truancy.

State Rep. Andy Schor, D-Lansing, introduced two bills last week that would alert Michigan’s secretary of state—who oversees the issuance of licenses—whenever a student’s truancy gets so severe that his or her school refers the matter to court. The student’s license would be suspended or withheld for six months under the proposed law. …

So long as our high-schools are nothing more than Liberal Indoctrination, Feeding and Warehousing Centers, what’s the point?

This law gets obliterated by judges when every kid goes to court and sues “I need to drive to get to work”

And...you gonna take licenses from homeschoolers

We need fewer laws, not more laws

Commonsense on it’s face, but it needs to be introduced with impounding of the auto as well.. That threat will have a real impact on the family to enforce the law..

I’ve got mixed feelings on this one. The usual democrat response is to immediately target the parents which is really kind of pointless.

On the other hand I think we should get kids out of the schools if they’re going to have or be a problem. Maybe a better alternative would be to strip them of their license unless they get their GED and a job. At 16 they should be able to work a full time job if they aren’t in school.

Spare me.. Geez.. I want to solve a bigger problem.. This is a local issue being corrected by a local authority.. Closing Washington would solve most major problems..

I disagree. Truants should just be kicked out of school. If they don't want to be there and they're old enough to drive, why waste money trying to keep them there?

Now, once that's happened, the welfare spigot should be shut off, though.

My guess is the HIGHEST truancy rates are found in minority “communities” and most of those students can afford neither cars nor driver’s licenses and their welfare moms could care less what they do with their time as long as the checks roll in.

Another stupid idea from a political party which thinks government can solve all problems.

He’s an idiot.

This is a root cause problem that has roots that go in so many directions, all brought about by liberal meddling, and corrupting our culture..

These band-aids are just a holding mechanism to bring the wayward teen off the streets, and breaking more laws.. Stupid, you bet, a solution, not even close..

It's actually a good idea, and I think it was done in my home town back in the early 60s. If a kid can't get to school because of a job, they should make arrangements for homestudy, GED, night courses...the options are endless.

One can't help but wonder if a percentage of the truants with cars are drug dealers etc using the school as a base for criminal enterprise.

NOT a good idea.

These piecemeal efforts to impose special hardships on the “villain of the month” are almost always a bad idea.

Keeping kids in school who don’t want to be there is a detriment to those who do want to learn.

If they want to drop out let them, they probably weren’t learning anything anyway.

Oh, and when did the government decide they own my car? My family will drive when and where we want and respect the laws of the road; and unless I violate the law they can keep their paws off my property.

How would you propose to apply that to home-schoolers. Would they have to submit attendance reports to the government to keep their cars?

Have you ever read the bill of rights? They are all good but in this case; I would suggest skipping to number 4. It might say something about ‘search and seizure’ and ‘due process’.

At least in my state parents already have the authority to revoke a minors driving privileges legally to some degree. The government cannot successfully, nor should it attempt to be setting the agenda for the parents. It is supposed to work the other way around in a Republic.

Linking legal confiscation of property to school issues is a reach the long arm of the law does not need.

As it is fewer and fewer teenagers are driving anyhow.

Thanks to MADD and all of their pre-qualification months and months of restricted learners’ permit laws, most kids are pushing 18 now by the time they are able to drive anyway. And then they discover they can’t afford the insurance.

I am of the opinion that state mandated formal education should end at the 8th grade, and at that age (12 to 14) young people may elect to into a trade school/apprenticeship program, at 16 they should be allowed to enter the workforce full time. Some young people just do not want to go to school and they gain absolutely nothing from it. I am also in favor of adult high school for those lamebrain kids who after growing up a bit, realize that after all, they do want a traditional education and would rather be a mechanical engineer than a mechanic. I also think, by the way, that an 8th grade education should equip the young person with the necessary reading, writing, and math skills to navigate adult life successfully, and enough knowledge of history and civics to be a responsible voter.

Why keep young adults locked up in a school when they don’t want to be there? I think it is natural that a 16-18 yr old wants to get out in the world and start doing something meaningful. For the kids that are moving on to higher education it would be a chance to have more intense and fast moving classes and the others can get on with discovering what they want to do with their life. I see high school as just a taxpayer funded babysitting service for the vast majority of the students.

I'm even more cynical than that. I think they're keep-a-lot-of-teachers-employed programs.

Our public school system is designed around the goal of college for everyone [also a teacher-employment scheme] which is ridiculous. If a kid wants to quit school, I say, let him.

He can go to work or starve. I'm not in a very compassionate mood tonight. Heh.
