"Duck Dynasty" backlash shows red-state spending muscle
CBS Money Watch ^ | December 24, 2013 | Aimee Picchi

The bottom line of the “Duck Dynasty” controversy may be that marketers shouldn’t underestimate the power of “red state” shoppers.

For those readers living in a duck blind during the past week, the whole mess started when the patriarch of “Duck Dynasty,” Phil Robertson, made anti-gay comments in a GQ interview. His message: “Homosexual offenders” (and other miscreants such as male prostitutes and the greedy) won’t “inherit the kingdom of God.”

After cable network A&E suspended Robertson for his remarks, a curious thing happened. Unlike other celebrity scandals involving offensive remarks (think of Paula Deen’s admission of using racist epithets), Robertson’s fans are waging a vigorous counterattack against the public outcry over his remarks. Support is so strong that Cracker Barrel reversed its decision to halt selling “Duck Dynasty”-branded gear.

"Most people like the fact that [the show] is real. Phil is real," Hans Wilz of Great Ideas, which makes “Duck Dynasty”-scented candles, told USA Today. "Most people are OK with that."

Cracker Barrel (CBRL) backtracked on a decision to stop selling “Duck Dynasty” merchandise last weekend, after customers complained.

“When we made the decision to remove and evaluate certain Duck Dynasty items, we offended many of our loyal customers. Our intent was to avoid offending, but that’s just what we've done,” the Southern-themed restaurant chain said on its Facebook page. “You told us we made a mistake. And, you weren't shy about it.”(continued)

Did Cracker Barrel think that hipsters like "Pajama Boy" were their main demographic?

Whoever made the decision to pull DD stuff off the shelves at Cracker Barrel needs to be fired.

Liberals act so insufferably superior, I don’t care if some guy wants to wear a onsie and drink cocoa while making a complete ass of himself. Live and let live I say. But liberals can’t seem to tolerate anyone that questions their values... they come all unglued.

Looks like the Robertsons have both Cracker (racist term) Barrel and A&E over the barrel.

Let the spankings begin!

LOL, the way she phrases this, it's as if Phil made it up instead of it being in the Bible.

You'd be surprised what shows up at Cracker Barrel on "the morning after...."

Sadly some of the executive officers of that company forgot that their purpose was to supply good food, at reasonable prices, to a portion of the country that lives mainly in the Bible belt.

You have a solid foothold in a niche market and make the stupid decision to pander to the 3% of the American population that has never set foot in your establishments.

Somebody needs to be polishing their resume if they have not done so already.

I am not going to be happy until they out THE persons who made the decisions to pull Phil and DD products off the shelves at A&E and Cracker Barrell and FIRE them in a very public manner.

Not real surprised Cracker Barrel caved to the gays

Most business, multinat corporations, most billionaires...are all leftist. Gosh...look at all the folks on here who still support Free Trade with Communist China (a liberal ideology subsidizing a Communist nation)

Too many businesses and rich folk are liberal. Unfortunately Duck Commander and the Robertson family seem to be the exceptions to this

Pennsylvania went for Obama twice. And is as red outside of metro areas as most fully-red states. We have a massive Cabella's and first day of deer season is a holiday in many areas.

The point is, even blue states often have large red streaks. And red staters usually are not on welfare and have their own money to spend. There is only so far blue state elitists can carry national chains.

The failure all around, A&E, Cracker Barrel, this author and even Gov. Huckleberry is the Red State/Blue State model. There are people who hunt, fish, trap, shoot, in all 50 states, not just below the Mason and Dixon line.
Duck Dynasty does not appeal to the lowest common denominator, as most reality shows but a higher one. This is not “Honey Boo-Boo meets the Swamp Creature” or “Real Wives of the Bayou”. The audience laughs with this family, not at them.
I would imagine this has as much to do with the homosexual marriage rulings across the country as much as anything else. People are tired of having this agenda shoved down their throats.

I think some of those intellectual (they claim to be anyway) morons are starting to learn you can’t tolerate everything. Some things are just bad for you and need to be shunned and opposed. Things like pedophilia, sticking things where they don’t belong, activities that result in getting AIDS, etc...

"Spending muscle"?!? This is more akin to a boil-over. It's just the extra that bubbled over the top. The rest of the movement to preserve American is still at full steam.

I know not what others may have felt but for me, what Cracker Barrel did was disappointing, not offensive. “Offensive” is how liberals and other intolerant groups describe anything with which they don’t agree.

If Pennsylvania is like Ohio, we’re outnumbered in the urban areas.
Ohio ‘went’ to Obama but he only won 16 out of 88 counties. Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Toledo and Dayton areas call the shots in major elections.

Actually, they don't.

Take MSNBC for example. Their principles lose viewers, but they still push them.
