‘Duck Dynasty’: Unreal outrage
The New York Post ^ | December 20, 2013 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 12/20/2013 5:30:14 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

So rednecks need to be politically correct now?

Wait, before the National Association of Rednecked Persons attacks me, let me be clear that I don’t mean “redneck” as an insult. Indeed, Redneck Pride has been on the rise ever since Jeff Foxworthy got rich informing people they “might be a redneck.”

Redneck reality shows have been all the rage: “Rocket City Rednecks,” ‘‘Hillbilly Handfishin’ ” and, of course, “Swamp People.” But the gold standard is “Duck Dynasty,” which follows the Robertsons, a family that struck it rich selling duck calls. It’s like a real-life version of “The Beverly Hillbillies.” All of the men look like they stepped out of the Hatfield-McCoy conflict to smoke a corncob pipe.

What all of these reality shows have in common is their shock value. And guess what? Sometimes the shock is manufactured. If the cameras weren’t on, the silicone life forms on the various “Real Housewives” shows probably wouldn’t be throwing wine in each other’s faces as much as they do.

But here’s a twist. Phil Robertson (who — shhh! — has a master’s degree from Louisiana Tech) gave an interview to GQ in which he said that, as a Christian, he has problems with homosexuality. He got a bit too detailed with his anatomical analysis. But his real sin was calling homosexuality a sin comparable with bestiality.

In response, A&E suspended him from the reality show about his own family. Which should give you a sense of how real this reality show is. If it’s about the family, some producer in New York can’t decide who’s in or out of the family. If NBC News decided it simply didn’t like the Republican Party anymore...

How about a redneck show where all the rednecks act an overtly political correct way? The sarcasm would say everything.

They’re the number one show in the history of cable television, Dozens of networks will be bidding to give them another forum.

Since A&E is still showing the show, their outrage is pure BS.

The point everyone seem to be missing is, the show is the #1 cable program because of the Robertson clan, not because it happens to be on the A&E Channel. A&E was the accidental beneficiary of a guy whose beliefs and values they despise. It’s as if a Christian network aired soft-core porn movies.

The Robertsons should take their bat, ball, and TV show somewhere else where they will not be mocked and punished for expressing their first amendment rights. If they do not, anyone who professes to admire, trust, and beleive in them ought to take a second look.

Yes I know “it’s a business decision”, but it would also be the height of hypocrisy for them to stay on A&E now.

Absolutely correct.

If they were REALLY offended, the show would not be running. They’re cashing in on this - what should we call them?

Nobody is outraged. Nobody is offended. The Left just wants to shut down dissenting voices from its relentless gay agenda. It's about quashing opposition, not true offendedness.

And even if they were offended, so what?

Remember when Coca Cola decided that their customers REALLY wanted a different soft drink instead of the product that made them #1?

A&E has just had their “New Coke moment” and alienated their loyal customer base who made their product #1.

To Coca Cola’s benefit, in less than 3 months, Coke Classic was back in production.

This will go down in lists of history’s most stupid business decisions. Stubborn ideology vs pragmatic business. What’s it gonna be A&E?

I don’t know, from 8.5 million viewers last week to 2.6 this week.

I’d call them stupid.

He never compared the two. What a shame Goldberg follows gay activists talking points

Every state and region has it’s own “brand” of redneck.

Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindahl and Ted Cruz come out early with supportive, non-judgmental statements about Phil’s comments. Not so with the so-called conservative media.

In this case Goldberg lays out the redneck premise probably to try to insulate himself from Phil’s conventional religious views. Virtually all of the talking heads on Fox News seem compelled to castigate Phil’s “vile” comments before they support his right to blah blah blah

Interesting comment by BOR tonight after an interview with Howard Kurtz and Bernie Goldberg...enjoy your email, you’re going to get plenty of it
