Office of the Press Secretary For Immediate Release December 19, 2013 Statement by the President on South Sudan

In 2011, millions of South Sudanese voted to forge a new nation, founded on the promise of a more peaceful and prosperous future for all of South Sudan’s people. In recent years, against great odds, South Sudan has made great progress toward breaking the cycle of violence that characterized much of its history.

Today, that future is at risk. South Sudan stands at the precipice. Recent fighting threatens to plunge South Sudan back into the dark days of its past.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. South Sudan has a choice. Its leaders can end the violence and work to resolve tensions peacefully and democratically. Fighting to settle political scores or to destabilize the government must stop immediately. Inflammatory rhetoric and targeted violence must cease. All sides must listen to the wise counsel of their neighbors, commit to dialogue and take immediate steps to urge calm and support reconciliation. South Sudan’s leaders must recognize that compromise with one’s political enemy is difficult; but recovering from unchecked violence and unleashed hatred will prove much harder.

Too much blood has been spilled and too many lives have been lost to allow South Sudan’s moment of hope and opportunity to slip from its grasp. Now is the time for South Sudan’s leaders to show courage and leadership, to reaffirm their commitment to peace, to unity, and to a better future for their people. The United States will remain a steady partner of the South Sudanese people as they seek the security and prosperity they deserve.

Yes, supposedly to protect the US Embassy.

He conscripted the TEA party reps in Congress and sent them in there.

So, evidently, this is just to beef up embassy security. Notice that he makes no mention of who the trouble makers are—Sudanese Muslims, who have been murdering black Christians and Animists in the South for many years.

Which side will he pick if he decides to intervene? It sounds like he’s toying with the idea.

Yes, supposedly to protect the US Embassy.

That's a decent reason, although it wasn't in the article. I would be more concerned with a vaguer mission which served as the nose of the camel under the tent, presaging a larger commitment.

So he’ll do something he has to do...he doesn’t think his media will cover up another Benghazi massacre.

Oddly enough, the WH press release doesn’t mention sending troops, that is in press reports of a letter he sent Congress... He couldn’t tell the frikkin’ American People he was sending troops? We have to learn if from yahoo or the AP? Something VERY wrong with this thug and his flunkies.

President of South Sudan seems to be mostly concerned with stolen cattle, and women and children as an afterthought:

It may well be that these troops are only being sent because of Benghazi. The Muslims that are attacking South Sudan on Sudan’s behalf have pretty much the same beliefs set as the Benghazi terrorists. Besides, Obama doesn’t want ANYTHING to disturb his vacation.

In this week before Christmas, during the past few days Sudan has exploded in violence and Christians are being martyred.

Between this and the pardons of the crack dealers, I wonder if we are soon to hear of even worse polls for Obama. Sending in troops like this, even sending Congress a letter, is unusual for Obama. Obama ignored the War Powers Resolution in Libya, now he sends a letter, for something clearly in our national interest (to protect US citizens and Embassy staff)? This is a sign of how incredibly weak he is now, IMO.

In 1960, the U.S. had a few hundred advisors in South Vietnam. By 1975, 58K dead. This is what Democrats do.
