WASHINGTON The National Rifle Association is backing Republican Sen. John Cornyn in his re-election bid, giving ardently pro-gun challenger Rep. Steve Stockman a setback.
Cornyn has a seemingly unassailable A+ rating from the gun rights group. But in Texas Republican politics, theres always room for extra credit on gun rights, and both candidates are looking to claim some.
No organization in the country works harder on behalf of gun owners than the NRA, and I look forward to continuing to stand alongside them on the front lines for years to come, Cornyn said in a written statement about the endorsement, unveiled Wednesday.
Cornyn aides and supporters tout his record of votes against gun control measures. He fought to expand the rights of those with concealed carry permits and opposed a United Nations arms trade agreement that he said would limit access to small arms.
John Cornyn is a consistent and passionate champion of our Second Amendment rights, said Chris Cox, chairman of the NRAs Political Victory Fund.
Stockmans stance
Stockman has been endorsed by Gun Owners of America, another prominent national gun group.
The group points to a number of pro-gun bills Stockman has introduced in the House, including bills seeking to eliminate federal gun-free zones around schools and military bases so that those on site could carry firearms to protect themselves and others from shooters.
Stockmans more proactive approach has been a selling point for his campaign.
Im not just voting pro-gun 100 percent of the time, Stockman said in a written statement about gun bans earlier this month. Im filing bills to TAKE BACK gun rights the D.C. gun grabbers have stolen from you.

NRA also endorsed Harry Reid..
Again, the NRA shows its inability or unwillingness to think two steps ahead instead of one. So what if Cornyn votes favorably on a few gun issues? He is an unreliable weak reed when it comes to overall liberty. The NRA got a posh shooting range at taxpayer expense out of Harry Reid and for that they were willing to sell out the Republic by endorsing the worst Senate Majority Leader in the nation’s history. As a refuge from the tempest of leftism, the NRA is a leaky raft. (Life member, btw.)
Chris Cox at the NRA is an establishment RINO. This is why I switched my membership to the Gun Owners of America. I do not trust Chris Cox at all. He likes to make deals with liberal (left wing) politicians. Wayne Lapierre should get rid of him.

The NRA’s motto when it comes to defending our second amendment rights against statists is “Let’s make a deal.” It’s primarily a policy of preemptive surrender.
The NRA along with other beltway interest groups like the Natonal Right To Life Committee are full fledged subsidiaries of the GOPe political machine.
In her first book, “Going Rogue”, Sarah Palin lamented that the local pro-life affiliate of National Right To Life in Alaska aligned itself with the political machine there.
“Im filing bills to TAKE BACK gun rights the D.C. gun grabbers have stolen from you.
Anyone familiar with how the US Congress works knows that the vast majority of bills “filed” are not going anywhere, and are not expected to. Their sponsors and co-sponsors will, however, mention them in every speech back home and in all of their campaign literature.
Stockman has my vote.
About damn time someone does...
State legislators here in PA play that game all the time.
So the NRA hasn’t learned.

I agree I think Stockman could be another Ted Cruz.
Unseating Cornyn is not going to be an easy task for a few on that list and impossible for most of them.
Even though it might be a great idea to try one of the “never prev. elected”, having election campaign experience and name recognition will be crucial.
The good thing about having 7 anti-Cornyns in the Primary, as it could, as with DoWorst, keep Cornyn below 50%.
The likely scenario will be a runoff between Cornyn and the next guy in line, which will be Stockman. As with the Cruz campaign, the runoff is where Cornyn’s time in the Senate and Vichy GOPe connections will not be an advantage and grassroots/Tea Party will be.
The NRA is like the Chamber of Commerce, good most of the time, but really, really wrong the remainder of the time.
If an incumbent is good on gun rights the NRA will support them....The NRA isn’t concerned with any thing but 2nd amendment rights....so I won’t fault them on this one!!!
what were Cornyn’s votes on amnesty?
Stockman had a chance before and he didn’t become a Ted Cruze, but he got a taste of the Washington good life and wants it back.
