Robert Chambers has been fighting cancer for 10 months so he occasionally wears a beanie to warm his cold head. Morton's staff apparently thought the cap did not fit the restaurant's dress code and ordered him to take it off.
Mortons Steakhouse will donate thousands of dollars to a Tennessee childrens hospital after staff at the restaurants Nashville location kicked out a large group when a cancer-ridden diner covered his head with a wool beanie.
There was immediate social media backlash after the 16-person Christmas party at the restaurant rang up a $2,500 bill at the chain steakhouse Friday and were then booted from the upscale eatery after Robert Chambers put on his beanie.

Must be a regional usage.
“Beanie” evokes the image of a goofy little skull cap with a propeller on it.
It sure used to be that, now pretty much any hat that is knit and tight to the head.
Arrogance.Did anyone ask for or try to explain before booting out the customers?
Morton’s was bought ought several years ago and the new owners have done lots of stupid things trying to cut costs since they overpaid for the business. Which is SOP in take-overs.
It’s hard to find good help.
Ah.
A “stocking cap” or “sock hat”.
(Also regional.. but familiar.)
Yet another example of people who act without a shred of common sense or empowerment to do the right thing. In other words, mindless, rule-following, sheep.
Kicking out 16 people who just spent $160 each - priceless. You can’t buy that kind of good advertising anywhere.
Was called a ‘toboggan’ where I was a kid...........
Those of us raised in Wisconsin & other cold states used them all of our lives.
We called them “Stocking caps’——NEVER BEANIES—and I still use them Wore one today in the 11 degree temps while I fed horses & broke ice on the water tanks.
I have made several in my lifetime, and they are easy to knit. Any teenage girl can do so.
A toboggan was n item used to go downhill. Many people could ride one at one time.
Flat bottom surface with a curved front.
NOT something a person wore......
Tuque.
(Also regional... but familiar, eh?)
But familiar.

Not in The South. Knit caps are commonly called ‘toboggans”. It may have come from ‘toboggan cap or hat’ and eventually the cap or hat was dropped.............
Apparently French Canuck.
Right. Should have worn one of these
Morton’s: Average steaks served in an uppity atmosphere. They are usually known for business meetings but only pretentious yuppies trying to impress the unknowing go there.
Hmmmm..corporate HQ is claiming that the location’s management didn’t know about the medical issue, but yet they asked Chambers for a doctor’s note?
if it’s single color, usually a dark color or black, we call them watch caps but that may be a military (or historical military) term
