ABC This Week viewers were treated to a classic conservative versus liberal debate Sunday.
When former Clinton labor secretary Robert Reich tried to blame the increase in poverty in the past five years on Republicans, former Speaker of the House and current CNN host Newt Gingrich called it "baloney" firing back, "Every major city which is a center of poverty is run by Democrats" (video follows with transcript and absolutely no need for additional commentary):
Gingrich Schools Reich: 'Every Major City Which Is a Poverty Center Is Run By Democrats'
JONATHAN KARL, SUBSTITUTE HOST: And let me ask you, Mr. Gingrich, Speaker, when you look at that issue of inequality - and this is something he's put front and center, the Pope has. It's something of course that President Obama talks a lot about. We saw the story about homelessness in New York--NEWT GINGRICH, FORMER SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE: Sure.
KARL: Stark reality of the gap in the nation's biggest city. Is this an issue that Republicans should be talking about?
GINGRICH: Absolutely. I mean, how can you justify the level of wealth in those big towers in New York City and the level of poverty in those alleys? And without talking about government, say, surely a society that cared, that believed every person was endowed by their creator with the right to pursue happiness, would come up with a better solution than 22,000 children that are homeless.
And I think that the Republican Party has an obligation to rethink some of its indifference to the very poor. And I think the Democrats have an obligation to ask themselves after 50 years of the war on poverty, isn't it clear that government is not a very good [unintelligible].
(CROSSTALK)
ROBERT REICH: The war on poverty - which next year we are going to celebrate the 50th anniversary in addition to the Civil Rights Act - the war on poverty was successful for a time. What has happened however over the last 30 years is that much of the, much of the ardor, much of the concern, much of the, what propelled that war on poverty has dissipated.
KARL: Why after five years of President Barack Obama we see the problem worse?
REICH: Well the problem is worse; I think it has something to do, perhaps, with the intransigence of the Speaker's Party, because every time there was a jobs bill, every time there was an effort to expand a low income housing, every time there was an effort to provide better opportunities for young people. We're talking about equal opportunity.
GINGRICH: Every major, every, this is baloney.
REICH: At the basis of this, what is baloney?
GINGRICH: Here's the baloney. Every major city which is a center of poverty is run by Democrats. Every major city. Their policies have failed, they're not willing to admit and the fact is it's the poor who suffer from bad [unintelligible].
Why should the Catholic church be forced to do anything?
!
All the mass shooters are left wingers too... NOT ONE is a conservative...

In the wake of recent high-profile shootings, the media can almost immediately be seen attempting to link deranged shooters with the political right. As facts come in, the desire to connect shooters to their political ideologies quickly erodes, as the same anti-depressant taking, left-wing, occultist profile emerges. left wingers... NOT ONE is a conservative or NRA member - not one...

Newt was my choice in the last presidential primary, as well as Jim Rob’s. We were beat by Tokyo Rove and the rest of the GOPe, as well as many here on FR. I also think that he should be our current or next Speaker of the House.
It amazes me that every Democrat program screw-up has to be fixed by the Republicans. The Democrats never refuse to acknowledge their failures, never!
Democrat Cities = Detroit.
Newt is a cheap Labor guy.
Reich implied it was better to give Obamaphones to minorities instead of some infrastructure being built by white construction workers. Reich is an open borders guy as well.
Steve King should be speaker of the house. Gingrich and Goodlatte want to move some immigration bills.
Yes, that was BS. Why would he say something that dumb? Republicans do care about the poor, which is why they want school choice, a freer economy, and are against socialism.
Love him or hate him, nobody can take Newt on in a debate situation on these shows. He wipes the floor with them because he speaks frank and plain and a person watching can get what he means and understands it.
Har!
A rare combination of both mental and physical midget!
That's the impression I have.
That's the impression I have.

This issue is always the problem for the Republicans because when they try to fix problems about poverty, the marxists on the left “that promote the mass murder of the unborn” Always give that cry of what about the children! When will any Republican stand up and state the facts on these leftists with this simple question. Why does your party continue to kill the unborn? Pretty simple, let them dance around that. Then ask them why the poverty level is higher than ever. Then ask them why no one has spoke out on the black on black murder rate in Chicago.
Many of the federal job programs have failed as opposed to private industry programs.
Federal housing has been a nearly total failure, imprisoning poor blacks in federally-built jails due to the crime in and around them. I lived in Baltimore and I saw this first hand. The same in DC and Philadelphia.
Reich is a marxist-lite and always has been. He’s powermad, and always has been. Glad that Gingrich took him to the whipping shed for a lesson in common sense.
Poor people don’t want to remain poor, like the freed slaves after the Civil War. They want a decent education for themselves and their children/grandchildren, so that they can work their way out of poverty into the Middle Class. I’ve know many of them who have and they are the symbols of the American Dream - work hard to the best of your ability and you will succeed.
Democrats, like the old slavemasters, want to keep their voters and donors on the welfare plantation, on the Food Stamp express, the EBT card game, and dumb as dogshit.
If there ever was a racist political party in modern American history, it was and it the Democrat Party. There were no blacks living in Nancy Pelosi’s Italian neighborhood in East Baltimore (Albemarle & Lombard Streets). Blacks had to live in the projects a few blocks north and east (The Murphy Projects which were finally demolished about 10 years ago as cesspools of crime/drugs).
Harry Reid never lived in poverty and conventiently made a lot of money in land speculation (and if you believe rumors, got some of it from the Mafia when he was the Gaming Commissioner).
Al Gore’s father was rich as shit. Only Bill Clinton came from a truely poor family and worked his way up the educational and political systems.
When you lift the rock of Truth off of the Democrats, all that crawls out are lies, more lies and damned lies. And that’s the truth!
What do their Immigration bills include? That may or may not be a good thing, depending on what is in the bills.
whenever some libtard mentions the greatness of clinton’s economic genius, i ask
why did he lose 52 seats in the house, 9 in the senate and 10 governorships?
I have never heard a coherent response to this. Surprise, surprise.
I once saw Newt leave David Gregory sitting there with his mouth hanging open. It was priceless. I always wanted to call him Dick Gregory for some reason, lol. Newt should of told Reich he was just another federal worker took the road to glory riding on his back.
LOL. Got a mean streak in you don’t you...
None of them remember the effect of Congress going Republican for the first time in what, 60-70 years.
