This was kind of surprising, since the victim was reported by local media to be carrying, and obviously as a war vet would have had situational awareness.

He was a cook. In movies like Under Siege, military cooks are killing machines who can maim with a dirty look. In real life, military cooks specialize in cooking, because it's a job that requires a full-time commitment, unless you're feeding people the same slop over and over.

Military cooks do have to weapons qualify, just like everyone else, and do self-aid-buddy-care, and MOPP training, and UXO training, and whatever they call sensitivity training these days, and keep their shot record up to date, and do bag drags.

And the NCO cooks have to do all of the above and make sure their little airmen do the same, and write rating reports and all of that.

And smile cheerfully at 6:30 AM after 3 hours of work, and cook Top's eggs just right.
