Chinese air pollution has been in the headlines for some time now. Earlier this year Beijing announced a massive program that would need 1.7 trillion yuan in investment over the next five years to tackle its smog problem.

While headlines about cancer villages and the other side effects of China's pollution debacle continue, and Beijing does seem to be taking the issue seriously, Chinese state media is searching hard for a silver lining.

Citing a report from a nationalist newspaper, South China Morning Post points to an article that tries desperately to put a positive spin on China's air pollution. The article argues that the smog strengthens Chinese military defense. From SCMP:

Sounds like something Obama would say and the mainstream media would dutifully repeat and support without blinking.

In this case the silver lining is the dark cloud.

Certainly a creative, if unconvincing, spin.

For many laser designated weapons he is correct —targeting is often ineffective, requiring gps guidance.

The particulate matter scatters the laser, which is partly why Saddam burned the Kuwaiti oil wells:

Camel-herder’s ECM.

Which I immediately throw in the face of any moron who mentions man-made global warming. Go after China and India and leave us the hell alone.

Another line they could try:

“The smoggier and more polluted China is, the less appealing a target it is to foreign imperialist invaders. They will set their sites on more foolish and pristine nations, and leave us in peace.”

We have no-burn days here on the west coast. Can't use the fireplace, can't run lawnmowers nor other small engines. Pisses me off because Chinese smog drifts to the U.S. west coast, and we suffer for it. We're not causing a lot of this smog, it comes from China.

I'd wager you aren't causing any of it...

...unless of course, "We" were to include the Hollywood Idiots. burning tons of raw gasoline for their exciting crashing, burning and exploding movie special effects over on the back lot.

So I was watching some documentary... Singapore is burning all their trash, and using the ash to build islands. Real estate is in short supply, so rather than landfill garbage, they burn it and use it to extend their shorelines. Bet they pollute a lot.
