This speech is generally referenced because Douglass blasts the Democrat Party as the slavery party, but I find that where he calls the Declaration of Independence "immortal", that is an important point to have as a vital part of the discussion.

Frederick Douglass has always amazed me.

He had amazing clarity of vision, coupled with remarkable communication skill.

The nearest contemporary person I can think of to compare to him is Newt Gingrich.

And they have not changed... Governmental slavery is the new flavor of the Liberal Democratic Party today.

Douglass pleaded eloquently for freedom and equality, and the opportunity to compete. Today, the slavery is economic and the slavemaster is the federal government. Yet most black “leaders” speak far less eloquently, and when they do, it’s for - rather than against - the forces that enslave.

I would rather have a Frederick Douglass Day than MLK any day.

“Pilate and Herod are thus made friends.” Even the central organ of the Whig party is extending its beggar-hand for a morsel from the table of Slavery Democracy ; and when spurned from the feast by the more deserving, it pockets the insult; when kicked on one side, it turns the other, and perseveres in its importunities.

Wow. Sounds like a 19th century Limbaugh talking about the 21st century GOP establishment. Truths are eternal.

Great read from a truly great man. Douglass was an amazing individual and one that sadly most Americans, white or black know nothing about.

Thank you for posting.
