The Leftist anti-Apartheid campaign was driven by the Soviets because to it took away from Reagan and Thatcher’s focus on the Soviet Union as the center of evil in the world. “How could the Soviet Union be so bad, compared to South Africa?”

Why does no one want to recall the murders Winnie Mandela was involved with?

I remember reading about this some years ago.

But doesn't the fact Nelson divorced her somewhat distance himself from that?

Supposedly, he underwent 28yrs of prison and torture, but couldn’t take that murderous, mentally-ill hag for very long. LOL. Chris Rock does a funny routine on it.

You're almost right. With Soviet ally Jonas Savimbi to the northwest in Angola and Soviet ally Robert Mugabe to the northeast of South Africa, the plan was and the prize for the Soviets would have been the abundant mineral wealth (gold and diamonds in particular) including strategic military minerals like cobalt which reside in SA.

Leftists in the '70's and '80's world wide exploited the apartheid system to justify cutting off trade with SA and isolating it. Reagan threw SA life support to ease what was a coming transition through what was known at the time as "Constructive engagement."

Reagan and Thatcher worked successfully and tirelessly to prevent the violent revolutionary fall of the sitting deKlerk government and essentially worked out a power sharing agreement. Nelson Mandela largely went along with it.

His former wife, Winnie Mandela was still a necklacing revolutionary, and was placed on trial and convicted and sentenced to 6 years for kidnapping. It got her out of the way long enough to let Nelson Mandela build a new image.

The Soviets intended for this nugget to be a domino to fall into the sphere of Soviet influence -- but the Soviet Union blew up in 1989 when Reagan foreign policy eventually won the Cold War without firing a shot.

And the Left never forgave Reagan and Thatcher for it.

All mention of connection from South Africa’s security services, America’s, Britain’s, etc. would have been derided as racist in the press during his lifetime. Because that’s how they roll. It would have been known by them for years. Even now, mentioning that the South African Communist Party has confirmed Mandela’s membership would be an inconvenient truth.
