AN DIEGO - A marked sheriff's vehicle hit a woman riding a motorized wheelchair across an Encanto-area intersection Friday, throwing her onto the roadway and leaving her with apparently minor injuries.
The court-services deputy driving the squad car was making a left turn from southbound 65th Street onto Imperial Avenue on a green light shortly after 8:30 a.m. when her vehicle hit the pedestrian, who was crossing to the north and had the right of way, according to San Diego police.
Medics took the 61-year-old victim to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment of a small cut above her left eye and evaluation of complaints of pain, SDPD public affairs Lt. Kevin Mayer said.
The deputy, who was uninjured, told investigators she had been blinded by the morning sun at the time of the collision. It was unclear if she would be cited over the accident, the lieutenant said.
Police noted both had a green light to proceed, but the deputy failed to yield to the pedestrian.
The deputy did not receive a traffic ticket because an officer didn't witness the violation.
Well that, and the car did it...
Bad day for the public in SoCal:
Bicyclist Struck And Killed By Sheriffs Patrol Car In Calabasas

At least the cop went home safe.
Maybe there was a blue light special at Dunkin’ Dounuts...
Or maybe there was a dog somewhere acting uppity.
Hope the bicyclist has insurance for the damage to the patrol car...
We must respect our keepers.

Yea that’s what caught my eye ... gotta watch thise darn cars they are sneaky !
Is “pedestrian” the right term?
Another bureaucratic term apparently of being within 10 feet of a crosswalk!
Well that settles it then the cop is totally blameless, anyway the women in the wheelchair is t fault for being the way of the cop even though she had the right of way.
It’s a surprise that the cops did’nt show up at the hospital and strip search her for drugs. I suppose she will recieve a bill from them for the damage she caused to the cops car.
They will check the lady for operating a vehicle while being impaired. I hope she’s not taking any medications.
Is she ever lucky....
How fast was she going in that wheel chair?
I thought the same thing. I've had close calls with kids on bikes who jet into the crosswalk AFTER I have begun my left-hand turn, causing me to brake to avoid hitting them.
They were not in the crosswalk when I began my turn. Nor were they on the roadway (visible as oncoming traffic). They were a "vehicle" on the sidewalk jetting into the crosswalk. I wonder if something similar occurred here. Does the story go into this level of detail?
The story does say the deputy claims she was “blinded” by the morning sun.

Did you watch the video?
I think Alaska Wolf got the boot.
She lost her $200.00/$1,000.00 deductible a month medical insurance due to obamacare. Her new medical insurance under obamacare is now $1,000.00 a month with a $25,000.00 deductible.
I'd say tops it would do 5 MPH on Outdoor Mode on a flat parking lot on high and it takes a few seconds to get it up to top speed at that. But at a crosswalk situation crossing traffic? The person would be a lot slower due to going up and down the ramps at the curb. Motorized wheelchairs are not the same thing as Hoverarounds or motorized scooters. Generally most persons needing a motorized wheelchair are cautious and a lot more aware of what they are doing and slow down to deal with hazards.
A huge disadvantage for the wheelchair user is visibility both for them to see traffic because they are sitting and others to see them in a traffic situation including parking. But as for visibility hey it could have just as easily been a kid crossing the road.
