Has anybody actually been to or studied South Africa enough to really say what direction it has gone since the end of Apharteid?

I have heard everything from it is a successful and thriving "multicultural" paradise to it has descended to being only slightly better than any other 3rd world African $hithole. Anthony Bourdain, (who tends to lean left) gave the impression that very little had actually changed and that whites still controlled most of the wealth and held most of the well-paying jobs and still even nominally controlled the military and police forces and that many had essentially walled themselves off into well armed, fortified enclaves where they simply ignored any laws from the black government they didn't like.
