It’s a pretty stiff fine, let alone the draft pick.

I wonder if he knew what he was doing. If so, he was a real wise-ass, and deserves it. If not—it’s a message to others not to interfere with game play—and he can afford it.

Oh he knew it. Pulling a “Woody Hayes” is frowned upon when 100’s of millions is at stake.

He knew. The previous day all teams were warned about that specific behavior and were told to keep out of the white stripe area because it's reserved for the officials. Tomlin not only entered the white stripe but crossed it into the field of play at a time and place when the opposing team was advancing. NOT a coincidence. If Tomlin can show positively that he watched all other runbacks on the jumbotron that game he might have an excuse. But I sincerely doubt that's the case.

the “chesire-cat grin” on his face immediately afterward tells me he did.

I wonder if he knew what he was doing.

He knew. He was looking up at the Jumbotron to position himself in the way while claiming he didn't see the runner coming - because he was watching the play on the Jumbotron! This is Obama level prevarication.

He absolutely knew exactly what he was doing. It was hard to tell in the original video, except for the grin on his face afterward which pretty much gave it away. Then, someone zoomed in on that video, and you could see him looking over his shoulder trying to time his “leap” from the sideline. Then, a few days after the game, THIS video came out, and in this one, you can clearly see Tomlin slidestep over to that spot along the sideline only as it becomes apparent that Jones is breaking down that sideline:
