a ' People's Council ' eh? Sort of like the Red Guards in China a few years ago , or the Khmer Rogue next door in Cambodia ? Government by highly sophisticated rice barge workers and effete Bangkokian communist students ? Yingluk should just give the order to open fire in a few locations . Just leave the bodies and do not dump them into the ponds at the crocodile farms ,which only breeds years of conspiracy theories .

The PM is a socialist and sister of a corrupt former PM who she is a puppet for, the “protest leader” is a conservative member (or former member) of parliament.

The more I see the recent unrest boiling to the top of the cauldron, the less I am inclined to travel there next fall.

Thank goodness for cancellation insurance.

The world is going to Hell in a Handbasket.. But that’s what happens when god-fearing folk stand up to tyranny and corruption. Stir the hornet’s nest, expect to get stung.

don’t miss Thailand ! Just stay out of Krung Thep !
Many parts of the country are fascinating and far from all the baloney that grips the big city.
Visit Chiang Mai , go trekking . Visit the lovely islands , go sailing ( or motoring ) Visit the incredible national parks , spot wildlife . The chow is fabulous , the beer is cold .Visit the Wat , no place like them on planet earth . Just stay away from the nutballs on the city streets .

Well if my translation is right, yes that’s right.

The protesters would appear to be the “good guys” and the current government the bad guys.

There have been student-led protests in that country since I was there in 1971.

Thailand, has been a constitutional monarchy since 1948, with many military coups coming to power, but never harming the Royals, which has been the dynastic family for over 600 years.

Not like England, you say in public that the king wears a different anything, and you ARE put in jail.

had those ‘ student led protests ‘ in 71 & 73 been successful Thailand would have gone Commie and the entire Royal family would have been hauled out to the jungle , starved or murdered . Like in Laos .
These ilk are of a slightly different sort . You have to be real careful with Asian anarchist movements ; they are usually communist backed somehow .

I do not defend the students. I agree with your surmise.
I pointed out how long these things have been going on, and that they are not a new thing, to be tied to the stupid ‘occupy’ movement, over here.

I was in this place in rural Thailand once , years ago . In my hat I wore a U.S. flag pin . A Thai saw it and came up to me asking , in Thai , “are you American ?” Of course I replied that I was , and I was thinking ‘ uh oh ‘ way out in the boonies , could be a rural Thai commie . He then went on to tell me “ Thank you ! Thank you America ! I love America ! When you fought in Laos and Vietnam you bought my country time , with your own blood . If America had not fought hard against the communists there , the communists would have taken my country too . They would have killed my King and killed my Queen and taken away our religion . Thank you “
I have never forgotten this conversation . And so when I write some of the thing that I do it is from direct experience , not some concocted right wing ideology . People that ‘know’ respect our sacrifices . Vietnam was a just and a righteous war . It’s just too bad that the American people were also too weak to stave off communism and the Leftistism of the ‘students’ on the home front . Will we ever learn ? Anyway , some Thais get it , they get it real well .

Why would you be supporting Thaksin’s sister Yingluk? Her entire reason for running for office and winning (with the support of the rural poor) is to pass an amnesty and bring her corrupt, socialist brother Thaksin Shinawatra back to Thailand. The yellow shirts are the only thing that stand between a Venezuela type situation and the modern world. The Shinawatra’s are corrupt, populist leftwing leaders - why are you supporting them?

I lived in Thailand back when Thaksin was elected and remember it was a dark day. Especially watching nearly every political party fold and join TRT. The one thing that has impressed me every time I go back is that the middle, upper and business classes are actually willing to fight back against this socialist crap. If the productive people had stood strong in places like Venezuela, perhaps the disaster they are currently living under would not have befallen them.

Correct, the Yellow shirts are the good guys and the current government are the populist leftists.

It does appear to me that the good guys are pushing awfully hard right now and I am not sure they really have the support for it. The amnesty for Yingluck’s brother was going to fail anyway. I guess the Yellow’s (good guys) know her party will keep pushing amnesty until she can bring her corrupt socialist brother back.

I’m due to be in Bangkok next month, so things are probably going to be very interesting. Hope it isn’t a repeat of 2010.

The sad reality is the rural poor majority support the socialists. Given a chance to vote, they will vote for the leftist Thaksin or Yingluck each and ever time. As I pointed out previously, it is sort of like the situation in Venezuela, Bolivia, etc.

Have a great time here - just don’t talk politics which is easy because Thais will not bring it up from their side, and remember a smile and a soft word or two will be more effective getting things done than any display of anger or impatience.

“Why would you be supporting Thaksin’s sister Yingluk?”

Best looking Thai PM I’ve ever seen ;^)

Give me an example of Taksin’s socialism .
Upon original election he was by far the wealthiest individual to ever stand for office . Thereby suggesting that he would not be as greedy and avaricious as all his slick predecessor nai-yoks . Per: Yingruk , the last few years have been a calm interlude . My family and I have enjoyed the lack of tumult that now seems to be returning with abandoned . I do not ever trust these self appointed Thai populous leaders . Scallawags all .
