Damn AR trains. Anybody do a universal background check on the engineer? How many more must die due to the misuse of these weapons of war? Oh, dang. We’re talking about choo-choos.

Looks like it happened by the Hudson, just south of Yonkers. I've taken that line in the past out of Tarrytown. Always a nice ride, especially with a Foster's oil can on the way back.

Whenever I see pictures of derailments, I'm always amazed that there are not more fatalities. Nobody wears seat belts on trains.

Flashback:

Spain Train Crash Conductor Was Using Phone

Investigators Say Train Was Traveling at Nearly Twice Speed Limit

MADRID—A Spanish train driver was talking on his work cellphone and traveling at nearly twice the recommended speed when the train derailed on a tight curve last week, in Spain’s worst rail accident since the 1940s.

A woman on the ground outside the station was killed by falling masonry. Two passengers were injured. The conductor was given a 25-franc fine and the engine driver a 50-franc fine.

Sister said they suspended service up to Albany from NY. What a mess for all the kids going back to school upstate after Turkey.

What I want to know is, how did it derail. I’ve been on the Metro North plenty of times, and their conductors are far better than those on the NYC public transit system, because they provide a smoother ride.

When stationed at West Point I used to take that line into the city. It was a bit expensive but convenient and the views are oh so pretty.

Prayers to all involved.

Oh, when living in NY I remember looking up the name of the station, this is what I found on Wiki:

The area is named after Spuyten Duyvil Creek, where "Spuyten Duyvil" literally means "Spouting Devil" or Spuitende Duivel in Dutch; a reference to the strong and wild tidal currents found at that location. It may also be translated as "Spewing Devil" or "Spinning Devil", or more loosely as "Devil's Whirlpool" or "Devil's Spate."

National Transportation Safety Board

2012 budget - $102.4 million. They're going to investigate - over a year before their finds are completed. Why isn't this a state issue? What good is the NTSB? I'm certain the states involved along with private enterprise could do a better job in a shorter length of time and would be more effective in making changes if they were needed. The Feds are famously ("but who cares?") in bed with the very organizations they are supposed to be investigating. What a waste.

I don’t know - it seems like everyone accepts the role the Feds (NTSB) play here and nobody questions their role, their accuracy, their timing, or whether the Constitution allows them to be there in the first place.

The engineer, William Rockefeller

Rockefeller “is totally traumatized by everything that has happened,” said Anthony Bottalico, executive director of the Association of Commuter Rail Employees, the union representing all the crew members.
